Default 1992 MK3 GTi question.

Ok. So I tend to know a little more about cars then most, I like to learn. So its time for me to do a little more learning. Some guy in a 1992 MK3 GTi came out to the car meet tonight. I was all talking with him (I dont know much about VW cars) so I was asking question about what engine it had. He said it was a 8v 1.8L engine. I was thinking there is no way VW made a 8v 1.8L engine for a GTi. So just a few minutes ago, I found out they did. So the 1992 GTi had a 1.8L 8v engine stock with a option for the 1.8L 16v engine.

My question is, how can you really tell what engine the GTi has in it? Is the 16v a DOHC design or is it like the 8v & only a SOHC? I tried to look into the oil fill area, but there was a black baffle in the way Any help some one can provide, would be great. This is going to be driving me crazy all night now

Its also the same year the MK3 came out in Europe. It has the MK3 design ie: not round head lights, but the guy claims its a 92. So I searched & came up with that little info. Thanks for the engine pics to. That does go to show it really is only a 8v engine in a GTi

Edit: Now Im real off track it seems. I guess I need to even figure out the difference between the Euro & USA ones. It seem the MK2 in Euro nations, had round head lights, while some of ours had square style.. What was the point of doing that
