Scion Hako Coupe Concept
Three new models! If that’s not something to get excited about, I don’t know what is.

Ward’s Auto spoke with Scion VP Doug Murtha about the future of the brand at the New York Auto Show. Scion had vehicles at the show (you might remember the xB Release Series 10 and FR-S Release Series 1) but nothing completely new. That’ll change next year.

“There’s no intention to radically shift the direction of the brand,” says Murtha. “These aren’t midcycle refreshes of anything in the lineup. They are three major changes.” Doesn’t that get your pace up a little bit?

Scion has been on a bit of rough streak these last few years. Financial issues at Toyota meant cutting back on Scion in lieu of Lexus. To the lay person, it looks like Scion is dying. They aren’t, but they’re certainly not selling as many cars as they’d like. Lexus right now is reaping the reward from Scion’s neglect with several new models. From the sound of it, that vitality will be coming to Scion in the next year.

What should Scion build? A new xB maybe? A luxury car? A four-door FR-S? An electric model? A moped? Who knows. Scion has always been Toyota’s experimental test bed.
