More Next Gen Scion FR-S Rumors Surface from Motor Trend

Scion FR-S Sedan
Until this car is actually drifting it’s way around Tsukuba, I’ve got it firmly planted in the “never gonna happen” column of potential new cars. I mean come on! We’ve been hearing about this car for months now. If it’s not this sedan rendering it’s the turbo version. If it’s not the turbo version, it’s the convertible. If it’s not the convertible, it’s the hatchback. For all the information Scion has given us, the next-generation could be a crossover and we wouldn’t even know it. Motor Trend says we have nothing to worry about.

They say a convertible FR-S will be out by October 2014. Let’s ignore the fact that Subaru explicitly stated that they aren’t interested in building the convertible for a second and ask the real question: Does anyone really want one? The enthusiast will lament the fact that a drop-top FR-S is heavy and comparatively unstable. Also, more than likely, they’ll be pretty expensive. On the flip-side, however, a small, inexpensive, automatic, slow, convertible might find itself a different audience than the FR-S has. Think about how easy it is to find an old 240sx convertible. Same thing with the FC RX-7. They might not sell like Corollas, but they’ll sell.

An FR-S sedan will increase the appeal of the FR-S by literally increasing it’s size. The car will be longer by 20 inches for the sake of the poor sucke… er, friends, that have to sit in the back. The most exciting aspect of this is that Toyota’ll use the turbo 2-liter in the Subaru Legacy. Twenty inches for a hundred more horsepower? I consider that a fair trade.

Whether or not any of this is actually true will depend on how closely the universe adheres to the internet rumor mill. Clearly, Scion is not done the FR-S, but they’ve been remarkably good about keeping their plans quiet. If this leak is true… What do you think? A 300hp, turbo, rear-wheel-drive sedan sounds fantastic, personally. Let us know in the forum here!
