2011 5.0 mustang..what do guys think??
Ford has come a LONG ways guys. My dad, who has been a mechanic for 40+ years and also a GM guy for just as long.. has moved over to liking ford a lot more in the past few years due to improvements in their reliability and build quality. And I tend to take the word of someone that spends all day wrenching on them and reading motors books over skewed forum opinions and magazine reviews in this area. Especially coming from a guy who used to want to put a bounty on all Ford engineers
The mustang of a few years ago was pretty much a flop as far a performance (Especially handling, I beat the GT's all the time on an autox course). But the new one is a different animal. IT will outhandle the Camaro and out run it for the most part. And you can actually see out of the Mustang ;)
A buddy of mine and fellow car enthusiast has been researching the WRX and Stang for about 4 months now. He was fully on the WRX until he test drove both. He was wholly unimpressed in everything but the performance of the WRX. Interior is (and never has been) impressive at all in them if you care at all about a nice interior. And I am more leary these days of their build quality ever since they built cars straight from the factory with a tune that would blow the motor. Nothing like going straight from the dealer to Cobb to get a proper tune on a stock car.
The GTI is cool, but not really on the same page. And it is funny how people will say that Ford hasnt proved them selves with the past few YEARS of improved reliability, yet will jump all over Hyundai the minute some magazine gives them a better "percieved" quality rating when their newer models have never even seen 100,000 miles yet. There is NOTHING to prove they have improved on their bottom of the barrel reliability issues in the past couple of models since they havent been on the road long enough to know. 20,000 miles means jack when it comes to reliability. Not saying they are not improved, but if you are going to say Ford hasnt shown anything, then Hyundai has shown less than nothing relatively.
I would still take a newer vette hands down.. but that is not even in the same category. The new mustang looks to be the car to fill that "somewhere between pocket rocket and real sports car" niche right now. Still funny that they kept with the live axle layout, but they seem to have managed to fix its handling detriments either way. The benefit is that the live axle should be able to handle increases in power much better. IF there is one thing Ford has always been able to make work as far as power delivery is concerned it has been their rear ends
And keep in mind this is from a guy who, when domestics were concerned, has always been a GM guy myself and owns 2 toyotas and a saturn

Enginfineer - as far as the interior goes I definitely like the WRX interior better than the mustangs. But just like your friend I was dead set on the WRX until I test drove the 5.0 yesterday.
If I were to go make a decision right now I would probably have a tough time choosing between the two. Although I haven't driven the WRX yet I'm sure I would have a blast in it. I think for me it would boil down to price and practicality (coupe vs wagon/sedan)

I want one or a WRX but the wife is set on a Camaro. Its as close to her old 01 6spd trans am that there will be. I hope with a kid on the way i can convince her to jump into a WRX for a spin. I know she will fall in love.
the new camaro has a VERY cheap interior quality and looks..
i think the new 5.0 beats the new camaro SS every possible way. In fact i think FORD has been producing some real solid cars lately.
I'm looking to pick a ford fusion as my daily driver/go to work car in a month.

jk jk..WRX would definitely be a better choice with a little one on the way for sure.
Speaking of Firebirds - my first car was supposed to have been a black 88 formula that my grandmother bought brand new..grandpa sold it when I was 13..super ____ed -_-....
LOL. Hey I got my Truck so she gets what she wants on her ride. Plus since i gave her my tC since I bought the truck and she never really liked it I gotta let her be happy with her ride. I would hate to be in a ride i didnt like so i know how she feels.

Oh I understand don't sweat it haha I was just busting *****.
The g/f doesn't want me to get rid of the tC and I know she'll hate me if I do it (for a short while anyway) lol so it makes it that much harder for me to consider getting a new car

Russ,
I drove the Ford Fusion for a week last week on a business trip (rental). My take on it.
Handling... not terrible for what it is. Not a bad feeling car.
Power.. Also not bad. Not fast of course but does the job well.
Auto trans: shifted pretty well. Didnt hunt and feel awkward as bad as some. Of course, it is an auto, so you still have to mash the pedal and have a sandwich waiting for it to shift, but no worse than the others.
Interior: Rental model, so nothing special. But fit and finish are pretty good, seats felt ok for the small amount of driving I did. Stereo sounded pretty good for a stocko system. Sirius tuner worked fine and the aux jack made good sound from my phone. Pretty roomy and a good amount of trunk space.
Overall, just a daily driver but seemed like a decent one at least

My brother just bought then new 5.0. Got to drive it not too long ago on leave. It is a rocket. Evolution performance already has an N/A 5.0 in the 10s. Granted though, after driving it, it's got nothing on my GT500, haha. You're in the same boat i was Emperor. I wasn't a muscle guy either but when i stumbled across my shelby it changed my whole opinion. I'm a striaght line guy, just took a little muscle to realize that.
I would consider it if it wasn't a freaking live axle. All the mustang fanboys had a fit over the IRS because a mustang is a "drag car" but any real drag car has a ford 8.8 or 9" rear swapped into it anyway. So give me my IRS and it would be a whole lot better.
the camaro is a nice lookin car, id love to have one but thats basically a waste of money here in nj with the winters. there is no comparison between the mustang, camaro, and wrx i mean with the awd/fwd. i had an 04 wrx and it was awesome in all aspects- fun, fun car to drive and great in the snow.
