best car for a 16-yr old?

I wouldn't suggest a total beater b/c you'll likely want to be sure it will get from A to B more than 3 days a week.
SUV isn't necessary... mostly b/c of gas mileage.

i'm not sure who's paying, i'm saving up at the moment so i can get a new scion xB with the options i want 
not a total beater but something like a large sedan that has like, 60,000 miles and is a solid car, but i want a scion so i don't pay 100 buks for gas every week

I had a 93 Cavalier that I bought the summer before my senior year in high school. That car lasted me 4 years with very few problems. I even rolled the car (lost control on icy road) and after a tow truck flipped me over, I drove it back home and ran fine (though I did have to get the windshield replaced).
A good first car is usually characterized as something that is ugly, old, SLOW, reliable, and cheap (under $1000). If that is what the kid has to drive, they will want to buy their own car as soon as they can and it will make them a more responsible person.
My parents made a deal with me that for my first car, they would pay for half up to $1000. My first car was a 1986 Buick Somerset T-Type that costed me $525. Fun car but a year later, I bought a different car on my own. Now, I have my Scion. The key is working your way up to a better vehicle each time.

Cant go wrong with a Cheap old saturn. Get like a 95 or something. My mom bought one new in 95 and still has it. They last. The body parts dont dent, the engine is strong and its not a Neon.

I drove around a 1994 chrysler concorde before I went and bought my srt-4 (then rolled it, and then bought my tC). It was a nice car, good air conditioning, comfy seats, and more space to carry around friends and other stuff than you could shake a stick at.

In all honesty, get a beater, something in good running condition that is dented and scratched, chipped, faded and ugly. The way the car looks will bring the price down, not alot of people want to be seen in a beater, but better when your still young than when your 30.
I used to take my 93 chevy barretta off-roading, it was hella fun, I got it for free because of the body damage it had, but the engine, frame and all were still good. I didn't love that car at all, but I had more fun with it than any car since.
Dont look for a brand, look for something that does not need mechanical work.

i had a 1981 dodge colt that never let me down and its 90hp ____d ___ cuz it was stick. too bad it got impounded and auction when i went on vacation for 2 months. damn neighbors had to pay me 500 buks for calling my car in.

Nothing can quite keep a new driver in check like a vintage Volvo 240GL wagon. Reliable and completely gutless, not to mention you've still got a pretty damn good chance of walking away from an accident, assuming that seatbelts are being used, of course.

i had an 86 golf that i got for 500 bucks from an old lady. i beat the crap outta that car and NOTHING broke, even with 185k on it. very fun car. see if you can find a 91 GTI 16v...really light and has 135hp, lots of fun!
