THE EVO IS FINNALY OUT
I didn't say that they were a wing. Technically a spoiler is anything that disrupts airflow in an attempt to stabilize the car by straightening airflow, whether it be on the horizontal or vertical axis. So technically a wing, canard, front splitter, etc. all are spoilers.
Did mitsu finally build a real evo to sell in the states? Last I heard, the "Evo" here was just a US-spec Lancer with fancy bolt-ons. As in nothing close to the real Evo rally car...
The WRX STI on the other hand was an exact duplicate of the STI rally car, with enough 'street' put into it to make it a safe daily driver.

I would say the Evo is just as nice as the STI. I mean neither one of these cars is a whole lot like their rally counterparts. About the only thing that is the same is the body (to an extent) and the motor (to an extent).
Everything thing on the evo is functional. The "large wing" is of course for downforce. especially in rally with high speeds and elevation changes the cars do "jump" when hitting nice hills. The wing serves to keep the backend of the car to the ground. If you watch a DVD either Best Motoring or Option2, they showed a visual purpose of the wing. They showed 2 EVO's...1 with the wing and 1 w/o the wing, both jumped a hill to simulate a rally "jump". The EVO with the wing was able to maintain a stable "jump" and land to where the car was controllable. The EVO w/o the wing on the other hand was very unstable and can easily see the back end of the car veer to the side and the way the car landed gave the driver a mission to gain some type of control of the car. The "fins" on the end of the roof of the car are "vortex generators" or "wind deflectors" much like on airplane wings which keeps the car stable at high speeds by adequate downforce to the rear end.
The EVO being overpriced? Yes...if your compare it to a Civic sI, Mazdaspeed Protoge, or a Corolla XRS, then yes...its overpriced, but it will outperform those cars in EVERY catagory in performance. Now...compare it to a 350z, G35, S2000, Corvette, or any other "supercar" then its a amazing car for its price. A $30,000-$35,000 car that can outperform cars $50,000+.

Now hold on there buddy, yes the Evo is a great car for the price but lets not go throwing the Corvette name around in the same sentence with the S2000. Also if you are talking stock for stock the Corvette will outrun the Evo. Especially the Z06
well, it dont matter how much it is, casue i dont think i'd ever own one....they are crazy hot though!!!! I love it...every evo just keeps looking and getting better....it is worth the money though......that car is sick!
I'll chime in seeing how I owned an Evo8 and almost bought the 9 about 2 weeks ago...
The "fins" as said by Boost4Doors are called vortex generators. They decrease turbulance which decreases your drag coefficient. At the same time, it makes the wing more effective. So the end result is less drag on highway speeds but with even greater downforce for stability.
The 9 is great but I decided to wait a while. With the MIVEC technology in their first Evo ever, it's nice to wait and see how all the tunes work out. Plus I'd never own an Evo without the AEM EMS. Just an EMS and an MBC set to 19psi (stock is 19 but tapers to 16 at redline, the MBC keeps it at 19), the Evo dyno'd a 60WHP increase. Just from a good tune!
I agree with most. For the money, NOTHING can come close to competing with an Evo. Sure there's the STi, but with all the technical crap people go through, the Evo has just been more easy to work with, given that they've had the same engine steadily approaching 20 years! (It's been modified, but it's fairly similar to the original).
The 03s had the water cooler which was cool but rarely used so Mitsu ditched it. The 05s have a better exhaust setup which has responded well to mods.
So far my Evo of choice is the Evo 8 MR. I'll wait 1 more year and compare the 2nd yr Evo 9 with the new Supra and GTR. That's when I'll decide when my next project will be.

good info. the evo is a great car and someone before mentioned the turbo lag. yes the evo does have a lot of turbo lag when you first stomp on the gas, but if you've ever driven one you would understand that it isn't really that big of a deal. it takes the turbo about 1/2 second to spool and then the car just shoots forward violently, pinning you against the seat. it's suspension is ultra stiff and you bounce around like you're riding in a scool bus, and everything on the car is functional. it's basically a race car with a warranty.
it's a very high maintenace car though. front rotors almost always have to be replaced with every brake job and they're $200+ dollars each. for the hell of it i looked up the price for one of the brembo calipers one day while i was at work. list price $1400.

I stand corrected then. It does look nice, both in person, and in the numbers it claims. I beleve cfusionpm got it right in saying I was likely thinking of the OZ Rally edition lancer...
The pricetag, "vortex generators" and wing are just not my thing ...

The new 06 STI and 06 Evo MR are almost identical in terms of performance. Like same 0-60, .1 second difference 0-100, like .1 second difference quarter mile, .01g difference on the skidpad, 1 mph difference slalom, etc. Ridiculous how close they are now. The Evo's engine is a better platform for mods, though there is no question the STi is a better built car. Evo's still have transmission problems and as mentioned before, slightly higher maintenance costs. In addition the Evo MR is slightly more expensive than the STi.
