Honda S2000
VTEC is a mechanical system. From what I understand, all these so-called vtec controllers do is remap the mixture settings. It has absolutely nothing to do with changing when the high rpm cams kick in.

BTW Chucksu, the S2000 is made to rev over 7500 rpm normally. It's motor concept is designed after Honda's F1 cars! It's perfectly normal.

Honda gave the latter year S2Ks a softer rear suspension and may have beefed up the drivetrain. This helps with the unwanted loose rear end problem.

His might have just had a bad engine, or he might of ran it too hard, but I'm not big on rotary engines. I'd much rather have the reliability that comes with a Honda engine.
The lower than normal gas mileage could be indicative of some problem in the fuel system. But more than likely, he ran his oil dry or didn't get it changed regularly. Or he got a *REALLY* horrible tank of gas. If he thought he was filling up with premium but instead got a tank of really bad quality 87 or fuel with water in it, it could have caused the engine to blow.
You can't really run a NA rotary too hard, it loves to be revved. Revving it high cleans out carbon deposits and keeps the motor running better.

The RX8 is severely overrated in hp....just FYI. You should check out www.rx8club.com, some indications of their true whp.
And it's a rotary design...it's a slightly different comparison when you're comparing to a piston engine. I believe it is a 6 stroke engine.

VTEC controllers allow the person to change the cam switchover RPM, so yes, they can control "VTEC".

And I thought the comparison was hp/liter in a stock car?
The 350Z coupe and S2000 are pretty well matched in terms of speed, though they do accomplish it in different ways. The S2000 is lighter and feels easier to toss around, has a superior gearbox and brakes. THe 350Z has a ton more torque and is a lot easier to live with on a daily basis.
The 350Z convertible isn't in the same class as the S2000- one is a GT car with 700 more pounds, the other is a sports car.
If you're looking at a used S2000, you can find some great deals for an 02 or 03- both have the rear glass window and slighly improved interior.
The AP2 (04+) has a bit more torque at a lower redline with a slighly improved interior- most drivers find it equally fast as the AP1, but a bit more liveable.
Word of warning- a high powered, light weight RWD roadster will punish a lot of drivers who are used to FWD dynamics. But once you get used to driving a well balanced RWD car, you'll begin to understand how front heavy most FWDs feel.

sorry, I think I meant slightly. but yeah..
Well, the comparison is hp/liter. But it's like...hard to really compare two different types of engines.
One is rotary, the other is piston. Sure, the rotary may have the packaging of a 1.3 L, but if you look into how it operates, it's really just like a six cylinder, and you can argue it has a 2.6L or even a 3.9L displacement equivalent of a piston engine.
the advantage of the rotary is the packaging..however, I don't think it operates at a 1.3L efficiency, seeing how it gets V8 like mileage or worse, and still only puts out around 190ish whp. Not bashing it or anything, I'm just saying that the hp/L is a bit vague if you're comparing two different designs.
