Default test drove an Evo MR

So I test drove a used 06 EVO MR today, it has 23K miles on it.. Asking price starts at 29K if vehicle will be traded in or 27-28K if paid cash or maybe financed.. I never considered trading in my tc coz I have a turbo kit coming plus I have done a lot of fun mods to my car. My wife was the one who saw it, she likes the red color and agressive look on it so we test drove it.. She liked the ride, its fast and doesnt feel heavy (i explained to her things will change when I turboed my tc) and the handling is great.. The interior looks better than the tc (not by much) but the recaro seat are so nice, aggressive and comfy.. Overall we were impressed.. It might be a chance for me to get a nicer car in addition to my tc cause its my wife's idea to try it. The car looks pretty loaded but Im not familiar which one is stock or not since the MR i think is the top of the line for evos, they just got it 24 hrs ago so didnt know yet what upgrades it has when i asked them.

So pros and cons
Pros
1. Torque and power- fast
2. Handling
3. AWD
4. 6 speed
5. brembo big brakes
6. Recaro seats
7. look well taken cared off, looks new
8. Sounds like a beast

Cons
1. Price a lil high for a used car?
2. used performance car- we didnt know how much abuse has it taken?
3. high Insurance rates
4. anything else?

So what you guys think?

The thing is, here where I live only 1 mistu dealer lol.. But I can give it a try when go out of town next week. Yeah a regular evo might just cost about same or even less if they give you a good deal

I may be wrong but I think the MR version is the most stripped down version of the car. I think it's similar to the Tuner version of the tC. Nice cars but I wouldn't pay that much and I'd also be a little worried about if it was abused by the previous owner.

^^ I thought RS was the most stripped version, i think it is but not 100%.. yup abuse is my most concern, i dont care if it was tracked a few times coz I know it could take some agressive drving but as long as it was in good hands with some respect and care it should be fine but with its life of 23k we would never know

I was looking at a few Evo's before i got my tC but i decided to go with the more economical one... although looking back at it $20k for a 2004 Evo with 22k wasnt too bad, but $29k is ALOT for a USED EVO... BTW the MR is the top of the line Evo, the RS is the stripped Evo for racing and such. i use to have a Lancer so i know some about the Evolutions, another con right now is that PREMIUM (93+ Octane) is recommended, and where i am that is about $3.60/gal i'd say wait for the 2009 Model Evo X to come out, it looks better, and has more power.

but thats my $.02

^^ yup that might be a good idea..
Most of my brain tells me
1.gas is expensive (im getting a turbo anway)
2.if that thing was abused your gonna be sorry for your 29K
3. wait for the evo X, its too much for used and all the cons i could think of
but my heart tells my brain few dumb thing like
1. dont you like what you drive (all the pros)
2. your wife likes it
3. its rare to find one just get it
4. what if some wil buy before you do
5. your wife is gonna help you pay it anyweiz
6. and more---- haha i wont let you sleep till you buy it..

The EVO RS is the stripped down model. The MR has the 6 speed tranny, aluminum roof that sheds about 60-70 pounds, the turbine is magnesium for a faster spool....its a better platform to work on by far. It was the worlds best steering ratio....can't compare its performance to the tC. However, I've heard of people having problems with the tranny so be sure to see what kind of drive train warranty will come with it. The down side is that its a car that was intended to be abused so there is no telling what it has gone through.

i wouldnt buy a used evo... they traded it for a reason, and it might be because something broke or is broken.

MRs might go up to bout 35K new but a well used one for few Gs more isnt worth it.. It looks loaded to me as im not very familiar with them but since they cant give me any infos of the upgrades it, I ended conversation with a we'll think about it.. (seriously they would buy a car to sell without knowing what it has? who are they kidding?) And as we were walking away I laughed when I heard the 8 yr old kid maybe the son of the owner said he and his brother always go racing and he said to get the evo coz it pulls really fast (aha! a good test drive ey) and asked me if i race.. I told him no, but im getting a turbo asked me some stuff and im surprised he knows car stuff lol

As far as reliability, it maybe in 100% good condition.. but then that thought is a gamble..
Good platform, yup sure is.. I would consider buying a used one, but not for that price..

Don't you ____ing dare buy a used MR for 29k with 23k on the clock. You can buy a brand new RS for that much. The MR is great if you don't plan to upgrade the suspension, and the 5-speed vs 6-speed debates can go on for quite a while.

Also, do not expect your warranty to be honored. Ever. Due to poor sales as well as multiple (thousands) of fraud attempts (people breaking things, putting car back to stock and trying to warranty parts), Mitsu will try as hard as they can to deny warranty work. Even if the car is stock, they can cite abuse. It's worse on a used car, because there have been a few instances where used cars have been sold as 'stock,' but come to find out later they have an Exedy Twin clutch installed, or in some cases, camshafts installed. Once those are seen by a tech, you're boned.

However, due to the massive aftermarket, you can get built/replacement parts for anything. You can even order a brand new never used crate engine from Mitsu themselves for around 6k. There are several vendors that specialize in transmission/transfer case rebuilds. AutoMotorsports and Buschur Racing are the two top competitors and either one can guide you through modifications the right way.

It is a fantastic car and is worth all of the possible snafus that could occur. I don't regret trading the tC at all. There is no comparison. It accelerates quicker, stops faster, turns better, and has infinitely more potential.

It was linked previously, but www.evolutionm.net is the place to ask any questions you might have. Just be sure to post them in the Newbie/FAQ section, otherwise you will be flamed. We don't like people that cannot follow basic instructions :p

1. the price is definitely high for a used MR. you should try checking out the car classifieds on evolutionm.net
2. if you are worried about the condition of the car. have someone that is familiar with evo's take a look at it.
3. insurance is all over the boards from what i've seen. some are paying less than 100/month. some are paying over 400/month for insurance. you should check with your insurance agent to see what your insurance would be if you made the switch. For me, i am currently paying 223/month for both the evo and a elantra. i am with statefarm
4. maintenance. if you drive a lot and don't work on your car yourself. it might be a costly factor as well. The factory advan tires lasted about 14K miles for me and the brake pads lasted about 22k miles. Premium gas only. synthetic motor oil only. etc...
