Default Timing chain tensioner troubles.

Hi. I just replaced the gasket on the chain tensioner and I did put the TCT back retracted. This is a 2010 Matrix. So I then turned the engine counter clockwise from 0 (top dead center) to 10 first and when I didn't hear any squish sound that supposedly indicates the hook releasing, I went back a bit further about 20 degrees from 0. I still didn't hear that hook releasing. I don't want to turn it counter clockwise anymore to be safe. There are people on youtube that skip the counter clockwise step and go straight to turning it clockwise but i feel that if i do that i'm taking a big risk. Has anyone experience this before?
