You can pick up an old spec Rx-7 for around 3k with a trailer. spend some money on wheels and tires and a few engine mods and you'll have yourself a very fast track car (for a road course at least).

Default older car

If you want a car for the track, look to something older. For $30k I could have my 90 Talon Tsi in the 10's or faster in the 1/4, I've seen a $20k 88 Monte carlo run 11's, I've seen 30k muscle cars run 11's or 10's. Any car you buy new today for around 30k is only gonna be slow compared to everything else at the track. You will spend another 10k-20k or more making it a "race car". Look for small light cars, that came with either v8s or turbos from the factory. Older Novas, Vegas, Mustangs, Darts, Eclipse/Talon/Laser, older Supras and Celicas.
Of course if its the tC you want to turn into the race car, then I would recommend something along the lines of a G35 or an IS350 for a daily driver with style.

Get the GTO. I think the 05s and 06s have the LS2 engine from the Corvette. Since you wanted a Vette when you were little, you're half way there with the C6 LS2 in a sleeper shell known as the GTO. You can get one for $29K if you do your research.

Go vintage.

'66 Vette with a L72. Pure bliss... :D

It took Chevy 40 years to put a 427 back into a production Vette, so "go big or go home."
