Default The WRX gets axed?

When the next-gen Impreza is released, it will come without the WRX, as reported by Autoblog.com:

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/29/s...being-dropped/

Autocar is reporting that Subaru will volly a strike against Mitsubishi in early April when it debuts the all-new Impreza at the New York Auto Show. The body style will be a five-door hatchback with styling similar to that of the B5 TPH concept that first appeared last year in Tokyo. Power will reportedly come from your choice of a 1.5L or 2.0L flat-four boxer engine. Autocar's shocker is that the popular WRX model that slots between the everyday Imprezas and the high performance STi model will be cancelled, and that we won't see the new STi until 2008. Autocar doesn't cite its source for this information, and it seems highly unlikely to us considering that Mitsubishi is planning to make its Lancer Ralliart more powerful than previous generations in an effort to face the WRX head on. All will be revealed in the Big Apple come April, but for now we sit and wait.

Starting at $23,995 (http://www.subaru.com/) they sure are a lot of bang-for-the-buck, but only time will tell.

Even if the report on the STi is true, there will be a full year of waiting.

They initially sold strong, but with three major front facelifts between 2002-2006, perhaps it's not selling as well as it did when they brought the current gen to the states.

It seems unlikely to me too. Also they dropped the 2.0 H4 for the 2.5 in all their models just last year, so it would be weird if they went back to the 2.0 so soon.

I love how Autoblog can't even show one of the spyshots of the upcoming Impraza. Are they trying to diss on Scoobys?

Anyway, I don't think Subaru is considering dropping the idea of a turbocharged Impreza altogether as much making the WRX the defacto of the Impreza line-up or dropping the name for say Impreza XT in an attempt to draw more attention to their NA models. Even though I do think it is a bad idea considering the prestige behind the WRX name alone.

Maybe they like the 2.0 better than the 2.5. And if also in WRC rules your engine has to be 2.0 or smaller, AFAIK.

getting rid of the wrx would not be the greatest move. i think there is one maybe 2 sti's around here ... i see wrx all over up here. they sell and they're decently priced. my boyfriend has one - i love it.

^^I agree...I see a few STis, but that is mostly at all-car meets. WRXs are all over the place tho.
