That's really interesting. I wonder if they are actually working on that new door design to be put in mass production.

What would go wrong with them? If they could perfect the mechanical design so that heat and everyday use don't hurt it, it could be a practical solution to door-dings and other such things.

... peoples normal doors go out of alignment all the time, sometimes just from age. Imagine the damage if this fell of its track. Think about the safety measures. For instance, suppose people are still getting out of the car and the door decides to go up? Suppose someone's shoe lace gets caught. Yes, all of these things can be avoided with some kind computer sensor (hope it wouldnt fail like all other electronics do) how much would that cost? Suppose your battery dies? How the hell are you gonna get back in? Suppose someone decides to mod the car with those doors and like most of us... lowers it. You hit a pothole or sumthing and now your doors cannot fully open, how are you gonna get out? Since these will have to be on a remote along with door switch, suppose someone opens the door while a kid is leaning against the door from the inside? So many things can go wrong...

Fail safes would need to be made as well as ways to prevent you from accidently pushing the switch to open/close..could you imagine if that woman in the video managed to accidently close the doors while getting her baby out of the car?

I do believe bmw used these on their z1 roadster. No idea if people had problems but I am sure their is a bunch of reasons why they never brought it back

Sure there are a lot of things that could go wrong, but the same could be said with anything that's automatic on vehicles today. I know personally my mother hated the concept of sliding doors on minivans, because they could shut too easily on fingers and what not. So there will always be risks for any part of any vehicle. But I suppose it isn't practical enough, like your saying. Else someone would have made it readily available already.

What year did BMW release it?
