Default Power Steering reservoir

Hey guys,

For the past 4 track days we have been seeing significant loss in our power steering fluid. My guess is that our power steering reservoir is boiling over and leaking into the engine bay.

Here is how it works...

Fluid level filled to max, over flowed out to low. cleaned up excess and ran again.

Low level still over flows and now the level is sitting at 1/4 inch below low.

It seems like it doesn't matter how much fluid is in the reservoir, it still boils out.

Is anyone experiencing this same problem?

I've had the same problem on hot track days and autocross days. I think Dan Gardner had the same problem and he was working or had made a PS cooler.

Dan got any info?

AZ is usually comparable to hell, but this past weekend was only 85ish which is cool in my book.

I am not fighting the steering too hard either. Its good to hear that you are seeing the leakage too.

I saw rados set up this weekend and he just had an absorbent cloth zip tied around it.

Jonathan et al,

Yes, this is an issue. Shockingly it is STILL an issue with a full P/S cooler setup. We used an auto trans cooler to do this. The solution is simple beyond adding the cooler. Run the P/S fluid at the ridge just below low on the reservoir. Put a cloth or something else absorbent on, and call it a day. There are no issues with running the fluid that low, and it is what is necessary to leave enough expansion room. We once measured fluid temp at 180 F.

Thanks for the help Dan. We don't get enough heat around here for me to worry about it yet.

Edit: Sorry Dan had a some slow posting there. Thanks again.

No problem. Our solution has been tested extensively, and it works. 7,000 race miles...

I have had the same problem so I installed a pretty big cooler and I added a layer of quality foam rubber under the gasket for the res lid, so far no more mess but have only ran in 75 or so degree weather.
