Default Accident Xa

For those of you that never hit a deer, head on, at 65 miles per hour, you are in for a treat. I had that experience the other morning. The deer came out of nowhere, and I had no time to react. It was hit, probably 85-90% head on, causing extensive damage. The thing that totally upset me the most, was that, the AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. the sensor, that's suppose to make it function, is located 13 1/2 inches from the front of the bumper, and there is no way, where it is located that this would ever make contact. I can only suggest you watch for those deer's. At this point the body shop is estimating the total damage at somewhere between $7,000.00 and $9,000.00. I contacted Toyota, and due to the nature of the accident, they are sending a crash team to inspect the Xa, to see if they can determine what went wrong. From the information I have at this time, the Xa may be a TOTAL..... Do I get another one, if this is the case, or look for a cheeeeep TANK to drive during deer season :?: Anyone wanting to see the pic's, e-mail me.

*chanting* PIC-TURES -- PIC-TURES -- PIC-TURES -- PIC-TURES

did you make it out of the accident without injury even w/o the airbags!?!?!? I just read something not to long ago about a guy whos air bags went off WAY to easily... good luck w/ Toyota.

I live in Southern Illinois and can understand your problem. During deer "season" which is getting to be nearly year round I try to drive at about 45 MPH where I can. I watch for deer closely at points where I know they approach the roads. Even so I have rolled one deer from one end of a Ford Ranger to the other and have twice driven through gaps in small herds as they crossed the highway. The deer that passed under the Ford Ranger got up and ran away but left me with a fractured plastic grill piece, a bent and leaking oil filter and a spot on one fender where the paint popped off. I favor a hunt which will eliminate deer in Illinois. Some sports people are lobbying for introduction of elk to the Shawnee National Forest and claim that the elk would not stray from the Shawnee to the remainder of Southern Illinois or get in the way of motor vehicles. We must cooperate with the critters or eliminate them it seems. There is no viable middle ground maybe.

aw man. that sucks.

i thought airbag sensors sense rapid deceleration.

That greatly concerns me, becuase every year there is a plethora of vehicle vs. large wild animal collisions in Alaska. I'd be very interested to see the photos of your car. If a deer did that much damage to yours, I'd hate to think of what a moose or caribou would do to mine!

if you understood what it takes to make an airbag deploy you would not be suprised that it did not deploy...

hope your car gets back on the road soon...

most front airbag sensors are looking for a deceleration of 10 -15 plus mph to 0 mph in 0 seconds... i'm thinking that a 170 pound deer isn't going to stop a 2340 lb car going 65 mph dead in it's tracks...

kinda surprised toyota investigated the accident... seemed pretty cut and dry as to why the bags didn't deploy... what did they tell you?...

Hitting a deer won't cause airbags to go off. The sensors in front are decelerometers. Not sensors that make an electrical connection when they are crushed. A deer will not cause enough deceleration to trigger deployment.

.....you sir......are stupid............

A tangible object, that decreases the "crumple zone" will cause the sensor to send the signal for the airbags to deploy.

A deer, a brick wall, a vehicle. Anything that crushes the crumple zone.

Acutally you are the stupid one. Stupid for resulting in such childish language. You are however, ignorant about how an airbag system works.
Airbag sensors are accelerometers and determine the force of the impact, anyone will tell you that. It takes at least 10g's to set your airbags off, on some cars higher than this. There is no kind of sensor that can rapidly detect (within a hundredth of a second) how much a car's "crumple zone" has been crumpled.
Now stick your foot in your mouth next time you want to call someone stupid or I will stick my foot in your ___

guys, put your short *****'s back in your pants, we don't want to see them. there have been many threads about how the airbags actually do work in scion vehicles on the site. please seek them out using the new found gadget we like to call SEARCH.

in other comments, it sucks you hit a deer head on, where i live in NY, when i live there, if one member of a family doesn't hit a deer every year or so a national emergency is called and we yank all the hunting licenses, so i understand. i hit a deer head on with my at the time suzuki vitara at 65 and did about $6000 worth of damage, unfortunately the thing was worth more than that at the time so they fixed it all for me. cars now are meant to be throw away, they save your life, you throw them away, take the fat insurance check and buy a new. Buy another xA you'll continue to love it....
