The thing that totally upset me the most, was that, the AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. the sensor, that's suppose to make it function, is located 13 1/2 inches from the front of the bumper, and there is no way, where it is located that this would ever make contact. I can only suggest you watch for those deer's. At this point the body shop is estimating the total damage at somewhere between $7,000.00 and $9,000.00. I contacted Toyota, and due to the nature of the accident, they are sending a crash team to inspect the Xa, to see if they can determine what went wrong. From the information I have at this time, the Xa may be a TOTAL..... Do I get another one, if this is the case, or look for a cheeeeep TANK to drive during deer season :?: Anyone wanting to see the pic's, e-mail me.
Deer have long legs, and their center of gravity is higher than a car. It's unfortunate that most car designers dont' take deer into the equation, especially since they have a tendancy to roll onto the hood and smash through the windsheild when hit. However, your airbag sensor is designed to trigger your airbag if you hit another car.

I'm sorry that happened to you, though, and good thing the deer didn't come through the windsheild.

If car designers took deer into consideration, we'd all end up driving in SUVs or really ugly cars, plus not all of us live in deer populated areas.

A tangible object, that decreases the "crumple zone" will cause the sensor to send the signal for the airbags to deploy.

A deer, a brick wall, a vehicle. Anything that crushes the crumple zone.

Thanks for your valuable input. You have proven all my hard work as an Automotive Engineer for a major OEM have gone to waste.

For some reason I knew my response would include a reaction like that. Thanks to those that know what I'm talking about and understand. :D

Deer were here first, so we took over there territory.
But we killed all their natural predators (wolves, coyotes, etc.) so they over populate and starve.

I'd rather see the surplus hunted and used as food than starve or become badly injured by cars. So I don't hate deer, I like all wildlife. I like them in numbers that can live off the woodlands comfortably without starving.

I don't hunt myself, but I'm pro hunting for the reasons stated above.

Default I doubt that it is totaled

My xb was hit almost head on by a full size dodge p/u.It did over 9,000 in damage just to the front. That is the hood, front pieces it didnt touch the fenders but did push the front end over slightly. It broke the manifold and some other minor things but they fixed it and you cannot tell it was ever hit. :D :?

I too know a little about airbag technology. underESTIMATED is wrong. He is also very childish to call SlODEANIS stupid.

A REAL man would say "I'm sorry". Until that time....you underESTIMATED, are childish and wrong.

Now if you could engineer an airbag that works only for people who know how it works...
