Default Clutch problem?

I have noticed a change in my xB. It has about 20k miles on it now.

What I noticed was a change in engine sound while accelerating in 3rd gear (manual trans). At first I was not sure but now I am wondering if the clutch is slipping. I am accelerating but as the RPM gets up around 4K it does not sound linear. Sounds like the RPM are climbing faster the car is accelerating.

The clutch seems to grab OK in the lower gears. I have driven many sticks over the years and got more than 100K out of a clutch so the clutch has not been abused.

Yesterday I was thinking that it maybe a change in the engine sound, not sure. I hope it is not the clutch, big job if it is.

Going in for service on Tuesday.

Any thoughts?

Good luck with that !! hopefully your trouble isn't too severe.......but if the clutch is going, have them install the ACT upgrade while your in there, If warranty is covering it they will only put in the factory stock one. It might be a good upgrade for you.

I have tried to do that but with it climbing as I accelerate it is hard to tell. It is not slipping so much that it revs up fast. My ears tell me more than looking at RPM right now.

Someone was telling me that there are a lot of complants about the clutch.

also the slipping at higer RPM's is the normal signs of the clutch going.

mine was slipping at 3500-5000 rpm's.
would be doing the same speed and the rpm's would just climb up...

a new pressure plate will fix this up....(normally a new clutch package has the pressure plate and bearing too)

some people will tell you slipage when you first shift is how you know it is going, but this is the most extreme case of slipage.

Took it in to service this morning. They right away said that it will be $90 to check it out. This would go towards repair or if it is warrenty there would be no charge.

They said the clutch warrenty is 1 yr/12K miles. he also said that they may cover this still but they would have to tear down to inspect the clutch. I would have to OK $450 in repair cost to get this far.

Problem is that if they say it is not covered then what can I do. I pretty much have to have them finish the job. Sure they could not change the clutch and put it back together but I would still be out $450.

Still waiting to hear back from the dealer on the first round of checks. I have not OK'd the $450 yet.

if you do get the work done at the dealer???? upgrade to the TRD clutch or else this will happen again...see if they will split the diff with you...

why 1yr/12k??? it is a 3yr b2b...

but to the dealer, they will most likely consider it a wear and tear part...

no....if a clutch fails in the firs 36months or 36k miles...there is a defect in that part/design.

brake pads, wiper blades....i could see them putting up a fuss, not a clutch with so few miles.

i bet the brake pads are still good, so how did the clutch go before a wearable item like that????

I have my box back! :D

Suburban (My Dealer) took the clutch apart and found nothing wrong. The clutch disc had lots of pad left, Throw out bearing was good, pressure plate looked good. All adjustments checked out OK.

So the clutch slipping could only mean one thing. The pressure plate was not supplying enough clamp force to keep the clutch disc from spinning.

They said it was a good thing that I took it in when I did. This way with none of the parts warn out, it gave them the evidence they need to warranty it.

So if anyone is having issues with there clutch slipping, get it in ASAP. I really think the pressure plate is barely strong enough to do the job. The box is much bigger than the Echo but the drive train has to do the same job. I hope I am not back again in another 20K miles. I am keeping my fingers crossed here. I see that there are many xB’s that are doing OK with this clutch setup but there are many that have had problems as well. I hope mine was just part of a bad run of parts and this one is a good one.

good luck getting them to warranty it. and.....if your clutch is slipping much at all the clutch disc will be severly worn down. and yes. like I'VE been saying THE WHOLE TIME the pressure plate is TOO weak for a heavier car.

sounds cheap to me....

300 to pull a strut, remove an axle, drop the tranny, replace the clutch and put everything back....
i paid 450 for that work.

get an estimate from another shop if you think it is high (you don't need to go to the dealer)
