The dealership I bought my car at here in Tampa offered free tires for life also. The catch is that all regular maintainence has to be performed on time and at the dealership. They told me that is does apply to my 18" Pirrelli pzero nero's. Of course you never know how they are going to be but I do have a certificate for it.

The cost of maintenance at the dealer is probably more than the cost of the tires for the period you will own your vehicle. So, they're makin money even on "free" offers.

Lessee, a set of tires costs ~$250 and lasts ~40,000 miles

Service at the dealer can run $150-$300 a pop every 7500 miles versus <$10 if you do it yourself or $50 if you have an independent do it.

You'll do 5 services during the life of the tires, so you'll spend a minimum of $450 extra to get a $250 set of tires. On the other end of the spectrum, you might spend as much as $1500 for those tires if the service writers get creative!

I have a feeling that there is also some weasel words in the "free tire" contract that prevent burnout fanatics from getting free tires every 2000 miles!

Default Exaggeration Once Again

Very simply: Do your Toyota recommended services (every 5000 miles) at the dealer on time (+/- 750 miles), and when the tires wear down to less than 3/32" of tread depth, you will get a free set of tires, up to $250 per tire. If you would like to upgrade, you pay the difference only.

The program does not cost the consumer a dime at the outset, and oil changes are reasonable ($19.95, including filter and oil). If you decide NOT to do your services with us, that's your call. Just buy your own tires.

This is really a program to help us retain customers. ALL of my customers get preferential treatment as it is, and this is just gravy on top.

Just read the fine print, and make sure it doesn't cost you anything.

My dealer offered this, but it was part of a service agreement, It was like $1500 for free service for life, extended warranty, free tires, and a buncha bs crap like free air freshner for life. There was no point in it for me since I had already planned on buying 18's for the car and they said they would not provide the tires for them. But I know for sure this was the dealers thing not toyota's. My credit union offered a better deal on a extened warranty, plus I don't have to buy it until I am down to 1000 miles left on my factory warranty. This one is cool to cause I can have anyone work on the car, not just a dealer.

I got the free tires for life offer at Toyota of Lake Norman in Huntersville NC, but the terms are you have to get all the maintenance done at Toyota of Lake Norman and if you dont, then the free tires deal is terminated. But really, most tires last a year or 2 before they need replacing. So its really not saving you any money in the long term. But like that scion dealer a few replies up said, it helps them retain customers, which is a good thing for the dealerships.

IIRC the free tires for life I was offered was one of the options in the extended service agreement, it cost money up front but then gave me the "assurance" that I would always have free tires. Since the average person will sell their car before they get new tires a second time, you're just paying up front for the first exchange. As George said (listen to George, he is a fountain of wisdom and truth!), at best you'll come out even on the deal assuming you were taking the car to the dealer for every single service. If you do the work elsewhere for less, it's not worth it.

While my dealer was really cool during the transaction, the guy who did the paper processing was quite a jerk filling out the 'no thanks' for this stuff. I literally had to say NO 5-6 times as the guy kept coming up with reasons why I was making a mistake. If the salesman hadn't been so good leading up to that point, I probably would have walked it was so bad. I say all this as the next person looking to buy should be ready for the fact that some dealer agents might still be in the mindset of pressure sales during the signing phase...

hmmm... tires for life... hmmm... i dont know about scion but for my friend with 2003 nissan sentra ser spec v. he heard about tires for life... so he was like. cool, its just another 1000 bucks over the total cost. ill just do burn outs everywhere i go. and after about 10K miles his continentals(factory tires) were completely gone(front and back) so he goes back to the dealership and they say... "ummm, sorry there guy. it isn't covered." why you ask, because that tires for life, doesnt mean free tires for the life of the car. it simply means, that if the tires have a flat, they will fix it for you. and the only time they will give you free or new tires is if there it is unfixable. as in a nail in the sidewall or something similar to that effect. they WILL NOT replace the tire if it was cause by normal wear. tires for life from Nissan... right... hopefully for scion, it actually is free tires for life.

I agree, the tires a shyat! It is way too easy to completely peel out into second, and I'm not power shifting either, his driving hard. You know, even accelerating hard in first gear, after clutching out, it is wayy too easy to spin the tires. These all season crappers are horrible. . . my only complaint about the car. . . I thought it would have been the armrest, but I can live without one. Other than that, I love my xA.

Car dealers are a business, period. Maintainence insurance, free tires, etc, they wouldn't offer you these things if they didn't turn some kind of profit. And if they didn't, I wouldn't buy from them, because that would mean crappy management, and I don't want a car from a dealer who doesn't know jack about business who'd probably hire crappy mechanics. You may save some money, as they are trying to compete with other independent mechanics, but bear in mind, don't be sapped into their claims; they want your money, it's as simple as that. Everything is statistically calculated, and the amount you are charged should allow the dealer to "break even" in a worst case scenario. Businesses NEVER run under any chance of losing money. . . it's bad business. You think casino's would do business if you had a remote chance of making money? Maybe one or two people will, but in the grand scheme of things, they will ALWAYS make money off you.

I got the worst crap from my dealer for the maintainence insurance. He told me "all cars have problems" and you'd be making a "bad move" if you didn't get insurance, giving me so much pressure. You know what I said? I said, "I'm buying a Scion because I know it has Toyota reliability, and maintainence won't be a problem. If I you're saying that it WILL have problems, then there'd be no question that I'd rather get the Mazda3." He shut up REAL fast. $50 deductable for maintainence, but if you calculate the average independent maintainence costs, it's UNDER $50. Too bad, because that means you will have to pay for most of your maintainence. Without insurance, you would maybe have to pay $500 in 4 years, on top of maintainence under $50, and gee, that's less than the $1000 for insurance. And let's see add it all up, how much money goes to the dealer? I hate the fact that they are insuring you on the aspect of the car that is least likely to fail. As a consumer I don't like being scammed. . . but hey, as a fellow businessman, it's brilliant, genious, wow! Props to you guys! You're gonna make a TON of money. I know some dealers are gonna flame on me for this hahaha, I'm fkin with their business, but all you car guys should know better. Shame on the dealers. SHAME! But at the same time, good job!
