Help me out; let's get Gassy!
Well, my work is the conversion of cellulosic biomass into ethanol, so I feel qualified to answer your question. Rising costs and environmental problems are mandating the use of ethanol which can be made from waste plant (biomass) material like corn stover, switchgrasses and even sewage sludge. Ethanol does hinder performance somewhat, but it is a small price to pay if you look at the big picture (i.e. energy independance). Look into what Brazil has done to see what the ethanol future might be like.

Biobutanol is a nicer alternative as it is very close to the energy per gallon as gasoline, but with up to a 30% increase in octane.

Does anyone remeber a movie called 'Back to the Future'? Remember that the Dolerean ran on garbage? That may be becoming more reaity than fiction.....

True, there will be a slight MPG loss with E85 and E90, but it still is a small price to pay for all the positives.

Ethanol does burn cleaner, which means a healthier environment, will eliminate all this "War for Oil" nonsense, is a renewable resource made from waste products of plants like corn and soybean and/or biomass and it is self sustaining (although cellulosic ethanol is MUCH better than corn ethanol). Even with E85, we will reduce our foreign oil importation by 15%.

Ethanol is not a cure all. It is only part of the solution. It will not solve all the energy issues we face. Responsibility is by far the biggest factor.

The efficiency of the average gasoline-powered vehicle is only about 15%, and we just cant grow enough to make up for throwing 85% of our produced energy away. But business being what it is, I have no delusions about the auto disappearing overnight. We must move away from using gas burning vehicles and move on to electric vehicles. But that is no solution for today.

If driving doesnt cost more, people will continue to drive as much or more. The best (read: easiest way to make it happen) is to make it more expensive to drive. A popular stance? No. A logical stance? ???

Some so called positives. They sound more like negatives to me. The only good corn alcohol is moonshine. E85 and such are garbage that should not be near a gas powered vehicle period. Now bio-diesel is another story.

Yeah, youre right...more HP is worth young soldiers dying, a shorter and unhealthier life and funding terrorism....

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Like it or not ethanol is coming and it wont be going away anytime soon.

Here we go with thw liberal stuff about the war being over oil and such. Give it a break please. Soldiers are not dying because of oil!
Ethanol may be coming but not in my area. If it was any good it would give the same power output as regular fuels.

Default what is it good for?

Well since the war (enter sarcastic laugh) was brought up,,,What ARE we fighting for?

If it's NOT for oil control to feed our American corperations, then I'd like a Verified response. Terrorists? Right region, wrong country.
Just know that almost 4 thousand of our troops are now dead cuz of this country's greed.
Now take that to your station and pump it...
Plus we have plentiful oil right here; PA's the closest state for the East.

But ethonal has vegetable oil in it? I heard of some folx putting straight corn oil and such into their tanks,,,dontcha need a diesel or specail hybrid type engine for that?

Biodiesel is for diesel engines and ethanol is for gas engines.

No, you are thinking of biodiesel, which can be made from old oil most commonly used to make french fries. Hell, even Rudolf Diesel (the inventor of said engine) said his engines should run on Biodiesel. Check this out for more info: http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/...ar/P115218.asp

Additionally, only a few minor modifications on any "normal" diesel motor can allow it to run biodiesel.

I see they haven't given you a response yet just like the Gov't they don't know why we're there either. I say it was to get rich off Defense contracts especially since Haliburton is moving to the Middle East.
