I don't know if anyone else is experiencing this problem but here goes.When I come to a stop with my xB in drive and engine idling there is a clattering noise coming from the front left of the vehicle.When I let off the brake and get going noise goes away but comes back again when I brake and stop.
If I put it in park or neutral noise goes away.It is a very noticeable noise and very annoying and frustrating. I have already been to dealer twice last time they replace the motor mount/insulator. Noise is still there. Going to be taking it back in again on Feb 7th to give them another shot to get it fixed correctly.
Hopefully third times a charm.When engine is cold on start-up it does not do it only when engine is warmed up and idling in drive. Noise gets worse if A/C or defrost is on and idling in drive with foot on brake. Any thought's and opinion's would be appreciated.

My lava has a sim. thing going on. The dealer thought maybe it was the hotchkis bar and some pipes/wires rujnning next to it and zip locked them out of the way, but it didn't solve it. My 5spd doesn't do it. It's like the auto idles low while stopped in drive and starts to shake itself silly. I get it cold or warm. Only time it didn't was when it was at the dealer, of course. Judging from the gas milage I've been getting maybe what I hear is a gulping sound??

 

This topic was discussed a long time ago. But here is the solution that most have found to help, myself included. Its the hood rattling.

There are 2 rubber bumpers uner the hood. Give them a twist up a couple of times. This should get rid of most of the rattle. If not, then try twisting them up a little bit more. Mostly the one on the drivers side is the one that needs adjustment.

This was a problem amongst most Lavas months ago, all automatic trannies too. Hope this helps.

Tamago, If I increase my idle I might get bad gas milage. not he miserly 17MPG this sipper gets now! ;-)

 

there's a TPS on this.. there's slack in the throttle cable, if you take up this slack, your idle goes from 600 to 700. this will not kill your gas mileage at all, and you'll get less vibration at idle.

 

yeah, I remember that TSB. Did you think my "sacrifice my 17MPG" joke was funny?

 

This may sound like a dumb question, but if you adjust your throttle cable, do you need to reset your cpu or anything?

17mpg damn.... thats awful.
I get a standard 28/29 mpg, about 260 miles per tank of gas.

 

no, you wont have to adjust the ECU..

all you're doing is taking up the slack in the throttle cable.. there's a TSB on it

 

Thanks Tamago. I will try and find that. In the TSB does it give any sort of instruction on how to do this yourself??? I wouldn't imagine that this would be to hard, a minimal adjustment should be no problem.

 

hood stops are a good place to start i had to do it to alot of xbs as far as the rough idle dont putz with your tps dont adjust your cable the cable wont do anything for me i read the write up on the ground wire kit you can make yourself
the person who wote it was brillant he took the time to measure the voltage drop difference i still thought it was bs untill i made the kit installed it and wow smooth idle even with ac on i dont know about the other claims but that mod
worked for me and was worth it and only 13 bucks!
dont mess with the tps you will trip the check engine light and then you will have to get it adjusted properly

 

no, it's easy. follow the throttle cable to the throttle body. the cable will have slack in it.. simply loosen the two bolts on either side of the cable mount and adjust accordingly, til there is no slack. do it with the engine running, to assure that you don't go too tight..

fix time, 2 minutes.

it was posted on scionlife a while back, and then taken down.. it was a PDF file i guess.. anyway, it's an easy fix, so pictures aren't really necessary

 

Another likely source of rattle is the vacuum switching valve bracket (funny looking brass-colored thing clipped to the top of the airbox). The clip on mine came loose and made all kinds of noise before I tightened it up.

 

Anyone know where to get this TSB (for throttle cable), without paying for it?
