Interesting article. The only problem with not rotating the backs would be if the tires are discontinued when you need to replace the fronts. You would then have to have a mismatched set.

I have had my tires on various cars rotated every six to eight thousand miles and most of my tires have worn over forty thousand miles. Tire rotation is very inexpensive. Most places you buy tires from will rotate your tires for free. They also check your tire pressure.

One item not addressed in the article is tire age. If your tires get to be six to eight years old they may start cracking on the sides. Tires that have high mileage on them are impossible to check internally. I had a tire that I purchased new (not a retread) blow and the entire tread came off the tire casing that held air. Luckily the tire was on the rear where I had control, but the tread hit the back of the car causing body damage.

I would recommend rotating your tires like your manual says or the tire manufacturer recommends.

Most cars don't have perfect alignment. When alignment is off, tires will wear unevenly and rotating them will prolong their life by spreading out the uneven wear. Ideally you want to keep your car in perfect alignment but there's really no such thing as perfection, especially if you have an older vehicle or one that was in an accident.
