Default How to fill gas tank to measure gas mileage?

Do you wait till the pump "clicks" or do you continue to force fill past that point? If so, how much more do you fill? How do you know when you've completely maxed out the 14.5 tank capacity?

Also, at what point does the pump usually click? Also, is filling past the "click" point harmful to the car in any way?

fill to where teh pump clicks off. Reset your trip meter. run that tank down. when you refill, refill until the pump clicks off. when it does record the number of gallons you filled up with and the number of miles you travelled. Find a calculator and divide the miles by the gallons and voila your gas mileage appears. don't forget to reset the trip meter at each fill up.

You really shouldn't continue to pump past the "click point"

Got it. So I'm guessing that the click point is the same on all gas pumps? That would make it valid then.

I guess you don't have to go all the way down to an empty tank either. That may not be too good for the fuel pump.

You could probably just take it to the 1/2 or 3/4 mark and then note how many gallons it takes to fill back up to the "click point".

yep, as along as you just fill to the click point, it doesnt matter how much gas you use before you fill up.

right, I believe this is the actual "correct" method... go to those intervals. Don't want to be pumping fuel near the bottom...

it doesn't matter if you fill past the click or not or 5 gallons past the click

as long as it isn't coming out of the tank you're fine

just take the miles on the trip by gallons bought

isn't that hard, this is 4th grade math..

incorrect.

your low on gas. you fill up. the pump clicks off, and then you add another gallon of gas.

your low on gas. you fill up. This time you fill up only to when the pump clicks off.

now you take your gas mileage for that last trip. It won't be accurate because the maximum amount of gas in the tank is different. your starting gas level was a gallon after the click. you filled up to the click the second time, and thus your accounting for 1 gallon less than what you should be when you take your mileage.

fill till the click so your gas starts off at the same level each time.

If you want to be **** about it, use the same pump each time.

Personally, I fill to the click, then top off to the nearest full dollar. The little bit of gas variance really won't make a big difference.

In the past this could have been almost a gallon, today it is less than a third!

I think that's what I'm going to do. I pretty much use the same gas station anyway because it's the cheapest. Might as well start using the same one pump.

Is anyone here picky about the brand of gasoline they use? I've been using mostly Chevron.

i use shell because it's a widely available top tier brand in my area.

iirc its toptiergas.com or something like that.

if you use the shell gas card you get 5% off gas purchases too

Dude, unless you're concerned about which companies make money off of middle eastern oil, there's no difference and no reason to go with a different brand.

They've got a special about gasoline on the History Channel that explains it quite well. All of the major oil companies put gas and diesel into the same pipeline system. They then pull it out of the same pipeline system at the various endpoints. The Chevron gas you buy is mixed with the BP gas and Amoco gas, etc. in the pipeline. The gas distributors do add some additives AFTER they pull the gas from the pipeline system, but most of the processing has already been done and the different companies put pretty much the same additives in before filling up the trucks anyway.

Long story short: IT'S ALL THE SAME, buy whatever's cheapest!

i like to use shell gas the most because of the quality and price. but on occasion i will use chevron. the whole techron thing is not just a ploy. ive read that one of the better gases. but, your preference is your preference.

Then why would the leading vehicle manufacturers state which gas they recommend and which they do not? I go top tier every time.

And for the mileage thing... the only good way of keeping track of your mileage is to record total mileage by total gallons consumed over several fillups without missing any of the gas used. more data = more precise and reliable. I keep a spreadsheet.

hmm... I would have thought BP would have been a toptier gas supplier - sucks though because I like their convenience stores and stations a lot
