Default HOW TO: Polish your ugly Header [with pictures and video!]

so.. i bought my car with the megan header and the header is ugly......... faded, cloudy, spotted, finger prints burned in to it and other problems.. so its not shiny =ITS UGLY!

but u dont need to buy a new one or spend 2-300 dollar to powder coat it.. what you need:

MOTHER polish ball ( the red one is just fine - the small one with the extension ] ( $20)
MOTHER Mag & Aluminium polish cream ( $4)
Sandpaper (1500-2000) [$1-3 (?)]
drillmachine ( $100 :D )
water ( $0.50 for a 20oz at publix :D:D )

you need to do this when you engine is cool !!!

1) you need to wet sand it.. sand it until all the spots and dark areas are gone. use as much water as you need... its "free" [ yes tap water is good too, you dont need the bottled one :D )

2) install the polish powerball on your drill.. put some polish cream on it and polish it.

you dont need to force it.. dont do it on FULL speed.. 1/3 speed... maybe less than that.. i dont know how fast is your drill.. (usually the corded one are fast... the one with batteries are sloooooow on full speed)

3) reapply the polish cream once a while.. you need a few hours to finish the 4 pipe...
after a while the powerball turns to black.. wash it with soap and just squeeze it a few times.. to be honest i didnt wait until it dried..

i was doing that little 2 inch spot for 20 minutes.. reapplied the polish cream.. like.. 3 times i think... i still need to polish that spot.. maybe i should re sand it.. i still see some small dark dots..

pictures:

As you can see all i did is like that two inch spot .. I'm gonna need like 4-5 hours to do the whole header......................

^^^^ how do you know?

its still better than how it was.. even if it will fade back in a few months... i will do it again in summer...

i just dont want to get a new one and dont want to pay hundreds to "paint" it...

i want shiny headers.

btw if you dont let anyone to touch it then it should stay like this..if someone touch it.. you need to clean it off with alcohol...

Default im finished with the polishing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!! i just finised it............. im speechless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it took like 3-4 hour to finish the whole thing... you gonna see.. even if you dont polish it just wet-sand it.. it looks MUCH MUCH better than how it was.. but after i finised the polishing.. and wiped off the dirt/dust............. 'nuff talking... the pics:

------------------------------- the first comparison is between the untouched ugly header and the second pics is when i wet sanded it. ( no polish yet!!! )

---------------------------------

and now the finished product:

------------------------the new look

------------------ the old look

-----------------------------------
ok.. and now on this two pics u can see how nice is the megan strut bar after i polished that too... ( on the first pics u can see i polished one part of the strut bar.. the second pics is the finished one..)

--------------------------

UPDATE!!!!

WATCH THE VIDEO!

Ok, so some of you guys said its not good because it wont stay lke that... WELL... this is how the header looks like after a few months: http://www2.djn-ice.com/CSOCSO-SUPRA...rfewmonths.JPG

the pic is big and i wanted to keep the original size....

so as u can see its still shiny and looks MUCH better than the rusty look!

a 30 minutes QUICK polishing:

http://www2.djn-ice.com/CSOCSO-SUPRA...uickpolish.JPG

well done. it was easy.

remember to polish it to the perfection it needs almost 2 hours... but the 30 mins quick polishing is good enough to bring it back to life.

haha alright man. I'm lazy as well so I'll probably just leave the header in the car and do it that way. I'll do this when I change my oil this weekend. Did you do this with the header cool or warm?

Just curious, do you think that after the polish the header will turn into the nice gold color that some people have?
