this past saturday i took my tc in for the first oil change after going over 1000 miles. today i just going thru the papers and finally saw that they used 10w30. now the manual says to use 5w30 and only use 10w30 if i must and switch back at the next oil change. so obviously 10w30 is not optimal for the car, should i leave it in until the next oil change? or can i make the dealer change it back? or should i change it myself?

 

The car came with 10W30 in it and when I took it in at 1k miles, they also put more 10W30 in it. I don't think it's a big deal unless you are somewhere very cold. In Seattle when it's cold and I drive to the mountains, I'm almost to the limit, so I'm going to live with it for now, but make sure my next two oil changes use the right oil. At my dealership they're even pouring it out of 1 qt bottles, so it's not like they just pump it out of a big barrel - they must have the 5w30 back there.

Check your tires too, by the way. Mine were set correctly (32/29) when I came in and then they CHANGED them to 30 all around, but they did it when hot, so there is no chance they were going to be right. I can't understand them sometimes.

After my dealer free changes are up, I've already got the 5W30 mobile 1 synthetic I'm goign to be using.

I would take it back and tell them, but of course, here in Michigan with the cold weather, it would make a bigger difference.

 

i like in CA in the bay area so its warm all the time. i guess it won't be too bad and i'll change it back next time.

 

You can't always go by what the work order/invoice says either. A few weeks ago, I had my first oil change done at the dealership for my xA. It was a free one, so I didn't really look at the paperwork. I just signed it and went home. After I got home I took a better look at it. It said they put 5 quarts of oil in my xA!! The car only holds 4 with a filter change. So I called them and the lady in the service area said, "Yeah, that's just what the computer prints out. They only put 4 quarts in your car."

 

yeah, it won't get cold enough around here to be an issue.

 

I'm pretty sure they use 10W40 - it's probably just a standard thing they put in every vehicle - unless you care, it doesn't matter that much. But I care, so it does. I'm not going to change it, I'm just going to make sure they do it right next time, which won't be for a while.

 

10w30 is ok

and you got to be an idiot if you think the dealer is going to wait for your tires to get cold to check the tire pressure...... i know its more accurate but you pay $21 in change for your damn oil change.... pay $50 and then they might do it


but the dealer is wrong, you the customers really know how to run a business and know everything about your cars........

If I were you, I'd stick to 10W30. 5W30 is only necessary in cold weather and is offered as a recommendation to cover everyone in the US. If they made recommendations based on the factors that matter, there would inevitably be many idiots out there who would screw it up. But living in CA, you have no need for 5W30, and if you take the recommendations of anyone who knows anything about motor oil and engines, they will tell you to keep the range on your oil as narrow as possible for your weather conditions. Unless you see temperatures below 0F, 10W30 is better for your engine.

 

You truly are a moron - Obviously you've bee warned before, but just the way you talk to people shows it loud and clear. I never said I thought the dealer should wait for my tires to cool - a process that would take many hours - in order to check them. I said that when my tires came in properly inflated, they shouldn't have CHANGED the pressure to 30 all around, which IS NOT the correct pressure at any temperature. They're the dealer - I expect them, at a very minimum, to be able to follow the procedures they tell your average person to follow.

Ya know, it's people like you who give dealerships and service departments a bad reputation. We, the paying customers, may not know as much about cars as you do, but it is our car. If we have concerns about something, it would be nice if you people would actually listen to us instead of having an attitude before the conversation even starts. If we ask about something that we aren't sure of, would it kill you to just explain it without the whole "man you're stupid" thing? Thank GOD most dealerships aren't like you.

I personally figure it this way, The people who built the engine say use 5w30, some Joe I have never met says 10w5000 is fine, who should I believe? As a side note when I went in for my first free oil change they used 10w40.
I could tell right away something was different, my car felt more sluggish, idle was uneven, ect. as the oilchange was the only thing I had done to my car it wasn't hard to find a culprit, So I changed it myself to 5W30 and haven't had an issue since.

 

i would have them switch it back and call scion to report this.. 10W 30 CAN be used but it's not recommended all the time.. it's not so much of a temperature thing (part of that) but it's also a fuel economy thing.. the 5W-30 is for more fuel economy.. that's why it seems sluggish, it's a thicker oil at 10W-30.. regardless they should replace it..

And yeah glad ashe_wcm was able to do the oil change again! But shouldn't have to.. i'd call scion and report this. they need to know their dealers are morons..

and for someone to set the air pressures to 30 all the way around when the person just drove in? Who's uninformed now? my tc is set at the stock front 32psi/rear 29 psi COLD.. when HOT it jumps to 36psi front/ 32-33 psi rear.. so yeah where does that guy get off calling us stupid because he doesn't have a clue? wow, no wonder dealerships have bad service.. non-caring employees.. I hope scion is reading all of this!! they need to..

Is there a chance they put 5W-30 in and just pushed a wrong button when printing the invoice?

If it bothers you, take it back and make them switch it out...they should follow the service manual guidelines.

That said, I think you'll be ok in the warm weather. Just change it next oil change.
