Default Manual starting issue

I mean, all the cars Ive owned have been manual... but on the xA I literally have to push the clutch pedal thru the floor in order for it to start.

Is this normal on the Scions? Ill push the clutch in turn the key and nothing happens.. but when I apply EXTRA force to the point my legs are flexing.. it starts up without a problem.

Ideas?

Sounds like you need to spend more time on the stairmaster. Just kiddin'.

I've got an Auto so not much help but can you tell what senses it being pushed in? Maybe you can adjust it a little or ask the dealer. It shouldn't require excessive force, just be engaged so the car won't hop.

I've noticed this on my xA as well. It got really noticable after I added floor mats---I have to really mash the clutch into the carpeting to start.

If you have thick mats, you could try replacing the driver side with a rubber mat. Otherwise, you could probably have your dealer adjust the clutch travel.

I would adjust your floor mats. Most of the time if you have floor mats in your car with a manual transmission, they tend to get pushed up behind the clutch, this causes you to not be able to start your car when you push the clutch in. If it's not that, then I don't know what to tell you. Good luck

i actually noticed this yesterday when I was driving the Scions and Toyota's around running errands yesterday. I noticed both the xB and xA have to have the clutch ALL the way down in order to start, figuring that maybe b/c the cars were just a new line and everything, that it needed to be broken in. Then I took this kid, who just started at the dealership, out in a 04 Matrix XRS to learn how to drive stick, and I noticed the same thing. Come to find out, on ALL toyota products, the clutch won't engage unless it's pushed ALL the way down to the floorboard. I would say if this is a real problem, I'd take it to your service center and have them adjust where the clutch grabs, cuz that would also make shifting easier, as well as starting the car.

it is normal. you have to have the clutch pressed all the way down.

is there an adjustment on the clutch pedal at all? or can the dealer fix that problem?

there is a little cutoff switch directly behind the pedal that, when pressed, allows the car to start. it is threaded, and can be adjusted so that it engages earlier.

If you look behind the clutch pedal, you'll find a switch the the pedal hits. This switch has to be depressed for the starter to operate. In order to depress the switch, you have to push the clutch through its full travel, which is more than you would to simply change gears.

The purpose of this switch is to stop stoopid people from starting their car in gear with the clutch engaged, therefore punching holes through the back walls of their garages. The clutch switch is cheaper to implement than a neutral switch.

I have some issues with the clutch switch. Starting the engine with the clutch depressed is hard on the crank thrust bearing, since it is starting starved of oil and with full stress on it. This can lead to crank end play problems. The fact that the Toyota has to turn several revolutions before the injectors start feeding fuel to the engine can make this problem worse.

I'm tempted to simply make a clip that holds this switch depressed all the time, but I need to make sure that the switch is not tied into the ECU somehow.

it would a long time before you see any problems with a toyota because of something like that. they run for so long with a long life of reliablity.
