Default manual tranny fluid question No this is not a how to....

Ok I have read a few post and all of have diff recommendations.... some say run atf others say run gear oil..... Now this is what gets me is I work at pep boys, the computer at work says that the factory oil is to be replaced with 75w-90 gear oil... So with that said is that correct that our cars have gear oil in them or do they have atf????

ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid. AUTO TRANNY
Gear oil Gear oil MANUAL TRANNY

Seems obvious to me.
You work at Pep Boys?!?! Pep Boys put my alternator on WRONG, TWICE!!! Didn't even know you could put it on wrong once. (older car)

But it all makes sense now, haha. J/K I'm just in a cut up mood right now- don't take it personal.

Just when I thought I have read them all...

It still stumps me that people will make such a major investment and not READ THE OWNERS MANUAL!!!!

Although to this guys (partial) credit, its not just auto parts stores that have ignorant employees. Scion itself is guilty of recommending a "one-size-fits-all" fluid for the manual trans (GL-5), Im sure because it costs a bit more to stock two different fluids. I find it absolutely incomprehensible and immoral of them to do this as GL-4 is clearly the only choice due to the "yellow" metals.

But at least they didnt recommend ATF....

hum funny thing is my old neon callsfor atf aka automatict ranny fluid when it was a manual....... Most of what I have seen is you guys put in is royal purple syncromax this oil is for manual trannys that call for atf or multi viscosticity motor oil or strait weight motor oil. This is why I asked to conferm to make sure I put the right stuff in. Oh and another manual that calls for atf is hum tremic t-56's. Guess I will not ask questions on here anymore since i just get ____ for asking a simple f*cking question. Thanks for all the flaming means alot.....

major investment and not READ THE OWNERS MANUAL!!!! well he does have a point, you cant take what a autoparts store says and always do it. just read the d@mn manuel, all esle fails go to the dealer and find out what they put in it, and being a certified mechanic i can honestly say i have never once seen a manuel tranny say to put ATF in the case.

Expect continued flaming if you ask simple questions that are answered in your manual.

Dodge DOES say to put ATF +3 in the AUTOMATIC transmission, not the manual:

Neon Transmission Data
Manual Transmission: Mopar MTX lubricant, p/n 4773167
Automatic Transmission: ATF+3, type 7176

http://faq.neons.org/faq/

As the above links shows, Neon manual transmissions do NOT use ATF. ATF would not provide any substantial shearing relief to a MT and would accelerate the wear on the gears very rapidly. Just as MT oil would NOT work in a AT.

Where did you read that ATF goes in Scion MT? I think you misread somewhere along the way.

Dont take things so seriously man. Just do a little bit of research on this site and you will see that 90% of your questions have been asked and answered already. Im not just being a d*ck...one of the reason the search feature on this site takes so long to find any relevant info is because there are 12366 posts about the same thing (i.e. what springs give me what drop?, how do I mount cathodes, etc.).

Im just trying to make this a cleaner site, thats all.

yes you are right but go to the dealer and ask for the mtx fluid they will laugh they dont have the oil anymore. I went into dodge and asked them about what oil goes into the trans of a neon (manual that is) they said for a 2004 its atf. The reason being that atf is for some reason dodge used some goofy ___ syncros or something that need a diff type of lube anyways not the point. As for reading that atf goes in a scion tranny I didnt. but people are using oils made for manual transmissions that call for atf or motor oil.... Here is a cut and paste straight from royal purples site.

Synchromax is recommended for manual transmissions that specify an automatic transmission fluid or motor oil. It is also ideal for 4x4 transfer cases and / or 2-cycle and 4-cycle motorcycle gear boxes.

Synchromax is formulated with Royal Purple's synthetic, proprietary Synerlec additive technology, which offers improved shift quality over a wide temperature range and reduced gear noise.

Synchromax is fully compatible with all types of friction materials and offers excellent corrosion and oxidation protection without affecting the soft metals commonly found in manual transmission synchronizers.

Try Royal Purple today and Feel the Difference!

People are running that, thats why I am confused. Why are people running stuff that was not ment for our cars hints why I questioned the info I read at work..... I understand that the redline mt-90 is made for manual trannys that call for 75w-90 but those peolpe that ran royal purple and stuff confused me thats all..... Just wanted to make sure I am changing my oil with the right stuff....

don't use royal purple. It'll mess up your synchro performance after a few weeks. If you're going to switch, switch to the redline mt-90

The best choice in my extensive research.

I would avoid Mobil 75w90 as it is GL-5 and not good for our transmissions.

I love my mt-90

I have heard stories about people using mobil 1 gear oil, and not even being able to shift ANY gears without grinding, they actually had it changed in the next day or two to mt-90 and love it. It was someone on here but i can't remember who

I agree with reading the Owners Manual, but there are Several Vehicles that use ATF in their Manual Trannies, Dodge was one of them and my T5 Manual in my Mustang is another.
