It involves removing the cylinder head to access the cylinder block. You need a few specialty tools to accomplish this as well as new gaskets and other non-reusable parts.

I definitely would not recommend you doing this by yourself.

May I ask why you need to check your rings? Are you blowing thick/blue smoke or consuming excess oil? Although I don't think with current catalyst technology you even see blue smoke anymore.

my car likes oil too. I lose about a quart at 3000 miles. i change my oil at 5 k. I guess you can do a compression test to check on the rings if you think the rings is the problem. another sign of bad rings is getting a lot of blow-by. When the engine is running open up the oil cap, if smoke is comming out then you have a problem. You shouldnt have this problem though. its a new car. This is how you would check for bad rings on the fly when you are shopping for a USED car.

Are you spewing black smoke enough to obscure cars behind you?
Does your engine sound like a 1940's John Deere tractor?
Do you have the acceleration of a geo metro running on one cylinder?

If you can say 'no' to all of these, you have piston rings. If you didnt have rings, trust me you would definitely not be driving the car anywhere.
