Default Oil

trust me, i tried searching. but, considering almost every post has the word oil in it somewhere, i kinda got a ton of hits.

anyways, what is/would be the best oil to run in the good ol' 1.5? what type of oil does it come with off of the lot?

basically, if it comes to oil in my xB, i want the low down on it.

thanks much guys

Look around the forum I just moved this thread to. Loads of info here. Tons of people, including myself, go with Mobil1, and Toyota filters. The xB comes with dino oil from the factory.

Here is a Mobil Oil site that answers a lot of questions. Do a search on Mobil Oil and you will see a lot of relevant threads. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...s/Mobil_1.aspx

One of the absolutely best oils for the 1.5 is Mobile 1.
Synthetics are better than 'regular' oils.
Use the weight Toyota/Scion recommends.
Toyota filters are some of the absolute best - so good in fact that some race tuners use 'em on non-Toyotas.
For my box I use Castrol Syntec and Toyota filters.

As the others said, sniff around in this forum - lots of info.

Several people here recommend Mobil 1 but I'm not one of them. I've driven 3 cars up to 200,000+ miles, only one of them ever developed engine trouble or had an oil leak, and that was the one that used Mobil 1! I'm not saying that's the reason, I just think dino oil is good enough. Even if synthetic is slightly better it's probably not worth the extra expense and hassle. If the engine does last longer, that only matters if you keep the car for 300,000 miles, most people change cars sooner than that. If you don't change your own oil it's defintely not worth it, shops carge some $30 extra and there's always the risk that the technician is not paying attention and puts in dino oil anyway while the shop charges you for synthetic.

And that is why I change my own.

I've got AMSOIL 5W-30 25,000mi drain interval stuff ready to be poured into the crankcase as soon as I get a filter. I'm also looking at bypass filtration systems.

I've got a tC but I just changed mine to Amsoil 0W/30 and already can feel the engine idle much smoother. Don't believe that engines will gain 10 hp like some people say. Amsoil/Royal Purple/Mobil 1 just helped increase the lubricity inside the motor. Amsoil has more independant tests which prove that it wears the least on metal parts though. Royal Purple has a graphite like metal in it which helps fill in cracks in cylinder walls, but sludges up in oil pans. Mobil 1 breaks down a lot faster at high rpms.

I only use Amsoil, Royal Purple, Redline or Mobil1
I also use 0W30 as it is the best for all needs.

Synthetic oil is known to find leaks. If there is even the tiniest crack or crevis, synthetic oil will find it and leak, moreso than dyno oil. This is why it lubricates so well--it stays in the bearings better. If you switch to synthetic oil and you get an oil leak, try switching back. It may stop leaking.

If you change oil religiously, then regular dyno oil will probably let the engine last a long time. Synthetic oil is mostly an insurance policy. If something goes wrong, or you forget to change oil, the synthetic will take the abuse longer. If you've spent $thousands modding your motor, then $30 per oil change is worth it.

when you factor in extended drain intervals you spend even money
