oil changes
Hello. My local Scion dealer indicated the Scion (and most Toyotas) do NOT need oil changes but every 5-6000. Is this correct? I always have done every 4000 though the tags that Jiffey Lube, etc. put on are for every 3000 miles.
Thanks.
Kevin
Thanks.

The owners manual and maintenance book make for great bathroom reading material
. As I recall, they say that scheduled oil change maintanence is every 5000 miles for heavy driving and 7000 for light driving. It explains the difference between the 2 also. Heavy includes hills, dirt roads, stop and go traffic...stuff like that.
And how the heck do you spell "maintenance" anyway?

Was readin my new manual last night and it said 7500 miles for normal driving. If you use dirt roads, have a car-top carrier or drive short trips in freezing conditions, then 5000 miles.
It's so hard to adjust to that type of thinking. i am used to having all the belts, hoses, fluids, etc. checked every 3,000 to 4,000 miles when the oil change is done. If I only drive 10,000 miles per year, then is 7,500 miles often enough for keeping an eye out for other potential problems?

i have the same thinking as you. although i have only been driving for 6 years i have help my dad maintain the family cars and it has always been checking everything 3k miles. the quality of everything seems to be better now. i think bmw's only need maintainence every 10k miles. i don't remember that exact number.
Spoke to the service dept, today, and the guy was firm that they want to do the free oil changes every 5,000 miles. I like that better than 7,500 miles... can spot problems earlier.
