Well I can say mine is definitely not that dark when I change it at 4,000 miles. One change was w/ whatever oil the dealer used, and the other two were Mobil 1. I have 17,xxx miles.

I use Toyota filters.

You should expect dark oil when new - break-in is the time when the most wear occurs, all things being normal.
I am much more aggressive during break-in oil changes, but as you will find if you read the Oil Stickies above, there's a lot of opinions on this topic.
FWIW, I changed mine yesterday @ 1000 miles, and will switch to full-synth at 2000.
I use Mobil1 and the Toyota filters at that point.

Oil is suppose to get dark...that means it is working by keeping "dirt" in suspension and not forming into a sludge at the bottom of your pan.

Are you changing every 3months/3000 miles? 90% of drivers operate under "severe service" and should not be going to 5K miles before changing oil.

FYI - I changed mine for the first time @ 1023 miles and it was not that dark.
