Default oil filter help, it's on too tight, is there a certain

so i'm trying to change my oil myself this time, and the filter is on way tight.

i went to autozone and picked up an oil filter wrench "f"cap cause it seemed the best fit, but that seems like its a little loose cause it slips when i'm tuggin too hard. all the other filter caps (a, d) looked way too big so i assumed since the f cap was the smallest and fit the best it was the right one.

is the oil filter f cap wrench the right one?

anybody know any tips to get this damn filter off?

thanks in advance

sorry and thanks sciond, i just thought not as many people checked the maintenance forums as much as the scion 1st gen forum.

if it gets me more help cool.

back onto topic, i got another filter wrench that fits better, but when i pull real hard the new wrench slips also. i think i stripped the oil filter bottom.

anybody know a good way to get this filter from hell off?

I use very large Channel Lock pliers on mine when I can't get it loose by hand. Well worth the investment for future useages.

get the kind that is either a strap or the one that looks like a large plier. they both work very well.

Yeah but the large channel locks are also useful for other stuff.

i ended up picking up a plier type wrench but that didn't help. the channel locks i had couldn't grip the filter good, and started just denting the filter a bit. i also didn't have the heart or the wiggle room to stab the filter with a screwdriver to get it out, so now my cuz is takin it to a shop so they could at least jack it up and get a better angle for getting it out.

if they can't do it then i don't know who can.

I used a cap type that i picked up from autozone which fit snugly into my oil filter and you can also attach a 1/2 drive wrench on the back and works fine with me iono if youve tried that. And also from wut ive heard you always hand tight your oil filter.

i used the cap type first, but the filter was on so tight the so called grooves at the tip of the filter started stripping.

as for the hand tightening i will definately be doing that next time i do an oil change, but the last time i changed my oil i let my cousin do it while i was out of town. i found out he didn't put any oil on the rubber gasket of the filter, and he put on the filter with a oil filter wrench tightened a little more than half a turn (too much).

i pretty much called him 4 times professing my hate for him, and i think i mighta strained my forarm with my refusal to quit on taking it off.

has anybody with an xb had this same issue but used the screwdriver stab method to pull it out? i'm just wondering how easy/difficult it worked out.

Sounds like hammering a screwdriver through is all you've got left at this point.

ps: if that filter is as mangled as it sounds, please don't drive it. Don't want to oil starve or pass broke filter bits through the engine.

You are better off picking up a filter removal device from toyota. Toyota filters are much smaller and it saved me a lot of time. Pick it up if you are gonna continue using a toyota filter, if not...you can pick up anything that is pretty universal.

I've also used those rubber jar lid removers with success. It grips enough if you have the strength in your arm and hand.

well my forarm's dead from trying. it also helped that i didn't have the car jacked up.

but i guess if i'm skinny enough to fit underneath the car w/o jacks than i'm not strong enough to undo the filter from awkward positions.

The first time i got the car it had the toyota oil filter and that was a B#$#TCH to take off i know how u feel. so i decided to go wit something else cuz toyotas filters didnt have that rubber grib at the bottom of the filter. Right now im using phram tough gaurd and i use the cap type remover and i use an extension wit a wrench attached to it.

I use genuine Toyota filters. When bought in a 10 pack, they are cheaper than Fram.

The standard Fram oil filters have garnered a reputation for poor quality construction. A few decades ago they were a quality brand, but compared to other brands, they are inferior in construction. There are a few sites on the internet where people have disected different filters and shown the differences. Here is a link to one such site:

http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfi...html#fram-ph8a

You may want to google it (Fram oil filter quality) as well as Frams lack of quality is well known. One of the biggest complaints I hear about is increased valve train noise.

Or you could always cut open a few different filters and see for yourself.

EDIT: Heres another topic on a failed fram OF: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...178247&fpart=1

Did you end up taking it off?
It's ok if it dents the filter, since you're not gonna need it anymore.
