Default Questions about changing oil on my xB - DIY

I want to be able to change my oil by myself on my box, what exactly do I need to do...whats the best thing I can get to catch the oil in so I can easily throw it in the back of my box without worrying that its gonna leak, and take it to a oil place to get recycled.

I was looking at that midyvac Evacuator thingy....anyone have any feedback on a product like that?
Also can it be done with car not lifted...or a jack under one side of the car? I hate jacks I fear its gonna fall on my face even tho I know how to correctly lift it, its just a fear =(*

Ive read several guides on here, and watched my technician do it =) but at 60$ for a full synthetic change, I think I could get it done my self much less expensive =P

I just have issue with lifting the car up and what catch to use....

Thanks

Just go to Wal*Mart, buy your Mobil 1 for cheap, go to dealer and get your OEM filters, go to PepBoys and get an oil drain pan and a couple of funnels. Go home, drink a few beers, crawl under car, crack open the drain plug bolt on the pan and drain oil into the pan you bought. After it all comes out, screw the bolt back in and then take the filter off. Install new filter with a coat of oil on the rubber gasket... snug it up. Drink more beer. Then use the funnel and add oil to motor... 3.9Q or whatever it is... look in manual.
Next find a gallon milk just or equivalent. Put large funnel in jug and slowly and carefully pour in the oil. I get an old piece of carpet to catch any splatter. FWIW, Hawaiian Punch gallon jugs work great. Prop the pan up on something so the oil can drain out... put the filter in too.

There, done. You don't need to jack your car up unless it's slammed. I put a jack behind the front DS tire and give my car like three pumps... just high enough to slide under my car which is on DF210s. You're only under the car for 10 seconds to remove the drain bolt, 10 seconds to tighten it, and 20 for the filter.

GL!

I bought the Pela 6000 to change the oil on my TDI Beetle. On that car it was nice because you could change the filter from above after you suck out all the oil through the dipstick so there was practically no chance of getting dirty.

I have used it on other vehicles too but still end up oily from the filter change.

They don't really suck very fast but it's only 5~10 minutes, just enough time for one of Romanova's beers.

Get a set of rhino ramps, drive up on them, get a catch pan with drain plugs from walmart, your choice of oil and filter and get under there..

The only thing I would add is to USE A JACK STAND. Jacks are ONLY for lifting a car, not supporting it.

As far as new rides go, a DIY oil change is a breeze with the xb. That factory filter is a pain to get off though....I think they torque it to 85flbs

IMO, they are a waste of money.

You will remove more of the dirty oil by simply dropping the plug and filter.

Once you crawl under the hood, the layout of the drain plug and filter is SOOOOOOO user friendly that there is no reason to use an evacuator thingy.

Additionally, you can leave the plug out while it drains for 5 minutes or more to remove as much of the old oil as possible.

I would recommend a "claw" type filter wrench for easier filter removal and dont forget to prime the new filter before replacing.

Of course you should always use a jack stand. I did not include the information because I don't jack my car up high enough to utilize a jack stand. You just need to raise the car up a few inches if it is slammed.
