Scion Mending Glitches in its Launch Phase
Unaccustomed as it is with marketing or technical glitches, Toyota hit a chuckhole with its fledgling Scion brand. Although nearly 100,000 Scions were sold in the U.S. last year, and the median buyer age of 35 outdoes all competitors, Scion’s initial quality rankings were remarkably low and its corps of younger owners reported unduly long dealer buyer experiences. “Is The Honeymoon Over?” a Forbes Magazine headline asks in its February 28 issue _ to which Scion’s chief, Toyota Motor Sales vice-president James Farley, responds in the firm negative, adding that corrections are being made as quickly as possible at the Scion plants in Japan and 800 Scion dealers across the U.S.
Scion’s portfolio of “youthmobiles” was increased to three last year with the addition of the tC coupe. No additional body styles are planned for the foreseeable future, says Farley, explaining that the brand needs a respite from the first two years of acclimatizing its franchised dealers (mostly established Toyota retailers) with the younger market. “These people are unlike any group the auto industry has seen,” says Farley. “They expect things to work differently.”
Among the product glitches that Scion experienced, to the detriment of its J.D. Power quality rankings, were bulging headrests and a slow-working air conditioning system. Scion’s ratings for 2004 were 158 problems per 100 vehicles, compared with the industry average of 119. Farley says a priority goal is “delivering Scions as glitch-free as our big brother Lexus.” Scion dealers have irked the enthused buyers of the brand’s tC coupe, five-door xA and boxy xB wagon by subjecting them to the finance and insurance sales process, which can last up to two hours. Scions sell for no-haggle prices starting at $12,600, but the F&I process adds more time to the experience than the “instant gratification” generation wants to devote.
As a fix, Farley’s team is asking Scion salespeople to take over the process of explaining and selling such add-ons as vehicle loans and extended service contracts. That omits the F&I manager step. Scion owners are offered up to 30 parts and accessory options to customize or “tune” their cars, and this feature has been a success, says Farley _ unless the parts are not in stock. Dealers are being urged to build their parts inventories for cash-and-carry Scion customers, which add to the dealer profits such goodies as turbos and stereo gear.
“We’re pleased with how first-time buyers and parents of new drivers have responded to Scion,” says Farley. “If industry patterns change because of Scion, we’ll be pleased all the more.” _ Mac Gordon

where's the linky please, forbes?
I'm not surprised that the initial quality rating of scion is actually poor. But you have to look at the long term quality survey (3-5 years) to see whether Scion is a solid brand. I suspect that it will be on par with all other Toyota brands.
