Default Source of Metallic Dash Rattling Sound Found

I took off the front console panel after continuing to hear rattling noises--even after I had the dealer do the fixes according to the rattles TSB--and discovered that the sound seems to be coming from the metal housing of the stock stereo unit.

I tapped ever so lightly on the top of the metal housing and heard the sound that has been bugging me off-and-on for weeks. It's a very tinny, metallic sound. I can only imagine that air behind the console and/or the vibrations from driving the car cause the metal housing to make that sound.

I tried putting a piece of foam between the top of the metal housing and the underside of the dash and then tapped again but this didn't stop the rattling sound. I wouldn't recommend doing this anyhow since the foam might melt from the heat of the stereo, but I just wanted to see whether something that put pressure on the metal housing might dampen the sound--but it didn't.

Anyhow, has anyone else noticed this same sound coming from the metal housing of the stock stereo (or the 6-CD stereo for that matter)?

Any suggested fixes?

If a dealer reading this could look into this issue and let us know what they find out, that would be great. It might just be the source of so many rattling problems that don't seem to be solved with the current rattles TSB.

Thanks,

I have a sound coming from my front end somewhere. Sounds like one of those red plastic cups draging?

can't you just go back to the dealer to replace the stereo? I know that if there used to be a problem with the stereos not loading propperly, but that was last year

I already had that done as the stock unit was one of those with the recurrent CD skipping problem.

The metallic box has a bunch of holes in it so the stereo can vent so I would think all stereos would have something similar. Anyhow, if you tap on the top of the metallic box with all the holes, you should hear a tinny sound like you're tapping on a thin cookie sheet.

That's the sound that I'm not sure how to get rid of...even with the stereo blasting, the tinny, metallic sound seems to come through.

try installing rubber grommets or washers between the metallic box/screws?

That might be a good idea. However, I think it's the actual top of the box that "rattles" and not any screws that either hold the box together or mount the stereo to the console.

Here's a picture of the housing which shows the holes on the top of the receiver. I'm thinking that air from inside the console and/or general vibrations from the car moving cause the metal housing to vibrate. The metal housing is thin and if you push on the top, it will flex. If you tap on it, it will make that tinny sound.

None of the screws holding the housing together were loose. Besides, if you break the tape seal holding the housing together, you end up voiding the warranty on the unit.

So, I'm not sure if there's any way to stop the rattling.
