Regular oil on the first one and then i want to do synthetic starting 3k miles. THe service guy at the dealrehsip told me its not recomended to use synthetic in the scion tc and said its bad. WTF! Can someone confirm this or give me some more info on it please, thanks!

I work in an industry that actually buys batches of synthetic base oils 550,000 gallons at a time. I've talked with many of the companies that provide these, and while they all say their oil is great, there is one that sticks out. The 5w30 Mobil1 synthetic is the best lubricant, and most 'pure' synthetic. The cost of goods to actually make Mobil1 is the highest of all the synthetics, but all the other synthetics charge you Mobil1 prices for a cheaper grade synthetic. If you're going to run synthetics, and want the most for your money, buy Mobil1.

Oh, and as far as hurting your engine. that is PURE BS. The Mobil1 product could actually be run in your engine >30,000 miles if the additives didn't break down.

That is absolutely true. I have seen the test on Synthetic oils and Mobil Sticks out but Castrol was a very close second.

I did my first oil change at 1000 miles (engine break in) then switched from regular oil to a 1/2 synthetic blend at 3000 miles and I am going over to a full synthetic at 12000.

I have noticed that the compression is still perfect and the synthetic blend gives me a little bit better millage (+1 to 2) and (sub-zero) cold starts here in NY are a LOT easier.

I can only see the millage and performance getting better with full synthetic.

I can't believe a dealership would say that about running synthetic... don't believe them! The last few engines I have rebuilt have run synthetic from day one. Much better on the engine

the dealer is lying to you. they just want your money. my experence with synthetic takes my car and my oil a lit farther than regular oil does. in my car. i go 10,000 and oil change . no problems at all. but use the free oil changes. theyre free. the mileage differences are minimal but youll see small improvements.

Alrite sounds good. I will use Mobile regular oil at 500 miles and then mobile 1 synthetic at 3,000 miles. I also plan on running the TRD oil filter every time as well. We'll see if that works out for me! woohoo!

smack that dealer upside the head they mine tried the same BS.
The best synthetics are Amsoil, Royal Purple, Redline, Mobile all which are true synthetics. IMHO I rate Amsoil as the best. I have Royal Purple in my cars now.

I use 0W30 as it adjust to the temp. For oil filters I use Amsoil, Mobil 1, Purulator Pure One only. I pay $5-6/qt and with extended drain intervals it is cheaper than Dino oil.

i totally doubt you have to worry about ruining your engine if you put in the wrong oil. it's a toyota....

i drove my corolla for 3 years, it has 92k+ miles. i put so many different wieghts of oil in it, still runs awesome.

1st Castrol does not make their oil ... they are just the bottler ... they buy their oil from everyone else. There are only 5-6 companys in the world who actually drill the oil and refine the oil, ExxonMobil is one of thoes companys. Mobil 1 Synthetic is a Group 4 Base Stock. That is the best most refined oil you can use. All other companys use a Group 3 base stock ... less refined.

Mobil makes the OEM Toyota 5w30 for Toyota to meet their specs. You can use Mobil 1 5w30 in your car with NO problem ... who ever told you at the dearship that it is bad needs to be fired, he is a MORON!

Why not just put in the Mobil 1 at 500 ... Why put conventional in at 500 and then change it at 3K ... Waist of money ... Just put the Mobil 1 in at 3K and youll be fine! The oil in your car now is Toyota 5w30 (which is made by Mobil) its fine till about 3-5k ...

1st oil change after break in to get all the metal shards out and stuff, the first oil that comes out of your car is beat, abused, dirty, and breaks in the engine, you want to get rid of it fast! And then you dont want ot put in synthetic right away because its very thin and frictionless so your engine doesnt break in properly, so you want to run it till 3k miles on regular oil so the engine metals rub properly. So conventional at 500 and synethtic at 3k and every 3k after that!

Where did you hear that at ... No metal shards in your engine EVER ... Your first oil change is the cleanest ... The engine is NEW with NO damage ... Who ever told you that you need to get metal shards out of your eninge needs to get shot ... NOT TRUE ... Metal shards is a good way to scar the piston wall and cause oil blow by which will blow your engine ...

Your first oil change may look the cleanest.... but it just might have the highest concentration of metallic particles due to the engine breaking in. Now these particles will be super fine.... if you've ever seen the build up on a magnetic oil drain plug you'll know the consistency is similiar to talcum powder...... very fine, I changed mine after first 40 miles and then again at 500 miles. Left the dealer do it using 2 of my 3 free changes. My third change will be with Amsoil (at around 3000 miles) and the dealer offered to do it for free (me supplying the oil) as my third free change, compliments of Toyota! In fact, he says he highly recommends synthetic oil after break in. And not all dealers use the same brand of oil (Mobil).... the one where I purchase my TC says he uses Valvoline.

If you want to read a little bit about breaking in an engine see this http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

As far as Mobil 1 comparing to Amsoil..... there is no comparison (imo)......... Amsoil is far superior. Do more research and you'll see. Now Mobil 1 is probably the best on the shelf at your local Wal-Mart....... but Amsoil is available elsewhere for about $2 a quart more. And that's really nothing if you want superior protection http://www.amsoil.com/

Around here (central PA.) all the Amsoil is the same price as it is set by the company. Sometimes the local tire dealer here (who is an Amsoil distributor) will run a 10% off coupon in the paper and I'll use this to buy 2 or 3 cases of oil for all three of my vehicles.
