Synthetic Oil

Left the dealer do it using 2 of my 3 free changes. My third change will be with Amsoil (at around 3000 miles) and the dealer offered to do it for free (me supplying the oil) as my third free change, compliments of Toyota! In fact, he says he highly recommends synthetic oil after break in. And not all dealers use the same brand of oil (Mobile).... the one where I purchase my TC says he uses Valvoline.
If you want to read a little bit about breaking in an engine see this http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
As far as Mobile 1 comparing to Amsoil..... there is no comparison (imo)......... Amsoil is far superior. Do more research and you'll see. Now Mobile 1 is probably the best on the shelf at your local Wal-Mart....... but Amsoil is available elsewhere for about $2 a quart more. And that's really nothing if you want superior protection http://www.amsoil.com/
Around here (central PA.) all the Amsoil is the same price as it is set by the company. Sometimes the local tire dealer here (who is an Amsoil distributor) will run a 10% off coupon in the paper and I'll use this to buy 2 or 3 cases of oil for all three of my vehicles.

I changed my oil out at 200 miles. Changed it out with more dino oil. Changed it again at 1200 miles. Then went straight into Mobil 1 5W30. Now i change every 6K miles.
BTW ... every change gets a filter too, Purlator Pure One ( blue casing ).

I have a 2000 Echo that I leased at first, then bought later. All of the maintenance for the first 40,000 miles was done by the dealer. Since the first oil change I have ran mobil 1 zero w-30. I now have 71,000 miles on the car and have never had a problem. After lease was up Toyota inspected for me to get extended warranty. The tech came and asked what oil I ran because the vavle train had almost no wear. Should notice less drag on motor in summer with the air on too.
yes, with the first oil change you will always have some metel particals. They might not be big enough for you to see, but they are in there. All engines will have them during the break in period, you just can't get around it.
you should not use synthetic oils untill the motor is proparly worn in. this does not happen in just 3000 miles. more like three or four times that long. the moving parts need to branish. develope a ware pattern. the rings need to "set" bed in completely. that is why anyone who knows oyu use a non detergent non additive oil for initial start of a brand new engine. you run the motor for 20-30 minutes then shut it off. drain the oil and put in a good dtergent oil and use it for about 500 miles then change. if you have an engine that is a "full roller" every part rides on some sort of roller bearing including the cam crank and wrist pins then your only concern during initial start up is the rings. but you still use the non-detergent first. after 500 miles yes there is metal in your engine. come on its metal on metal what do you think is going to happen. every time you start your car there will be metal rubed off period. the oil drains away from the parts. the more you start and stop your engine the more this will happen.
the most important parts you need to worry about is the rings they need to fully and proporly set. if they do not you will get excessive blow-by you will use more oil. when your car is old and worn out where do you think the oil goes?
yes synthetic is for sure the way to go. but only after the engine is fully broken in. Toyota makes an engine that seems to last for ever. unfortunatly this means it takes longer to break-in. call any oil company that makes synthetic and ask them they will tell you. they recommend waiting untill you have 15-20,000 miles before switching.
every new Corvette comes with synthetic oil from the factory but every Corvette motor is spun dry at the factory to ensure the rings are set.
the 50-50 synthetic-regular mix is good but it will increase the break-in period. if you go this way i would wait 6000 mi then go 50-50 then another 6000 and go all synthetic.
i am going to use my free changes. 500 first 3000 second 6000 third then i will go synthetic at 9000
everyone has an oppinion.
Royal Purple or NEO (Red Line) are the best. no doubts
Amsoil is also very good
twenty years ago when Mobil-1 was graphfite it was the best. if you can find it it would be a great choice right from the begining. the last time i saw it it was on sale for $8.95 a quart.
you can't go wrong with Castrol Syntec or Mobile-1 synthetic
i would not use Penzoil Valvaline or Havaline
this is just my a++hole i mean oppinion

can the filters last as long as the oil? i remember reading that the filter is only good for about 3000 miles and that i should change the filter twice for every 1 oil change...is that still true? i will start using mobile1 since i have about 12000 on the clock now. but i'm unsure of the filter.
JSYK, our dealership uses a synthetic blend in ALL of the oil changes we do (at no extra cost either). As previously stated, synthetics work very well in Toyota/Scion motors and should be used when possible.
I'm switching to "Valvoline Synpower" today from our standard synthetic blend. The oil was free as part of my sponsorship deal with them. Hope to see 1 or 2 MPG increase, but since I'm already running a blend I doubt it. Oh well, free is free and if I see benefits, I'll report them!

well I hope I didnt hurt my engine too badly =(
I ran on factory oil for about 5k and then went straight to Mobil 1 synthetic and Mobil 1 filter. It has 11000miles now so 6k on the mobil 1,
I was curious and pulled out the oil stick and the oil was golden, when rubbed in cloth it was a light light golden brown, so thought it was still good. the mobil 1 that is...
