Default Taillight Problem

I installed a new set of chrome taillights on the xb. They look fabulous, however I can't get the reverse lights working. I had to jimmy the other bulbs a bit to secure an electrical connection, but it's no go on the two reverse bulbs. Two thoughts come to mind. One would be that the switch at the transmission isn't working. I doubt it, though I will swap in one of the old taillights next weekend to check. The other is that like many aftermarket replacement parts, the quality control isn't quite up to par and that the "circuit board" in the new lights is not quite right. Has anyone run into this? Has anyone tried to swap out the circuit board with the originals? Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated!
