Default Underbody Ticking...

Just out of curiousity, I was wondering what was causing the ticking under the body of my xA (as well as most other cars) when I get out after driving for awhile. I know my mother's saturn does this, and my old mercury did this, also. I've been told it's normal, but no one has ever actually told me what it is. Do you guys know?

I don't know, never actually thought about it, I used to think it was just road grit falling off(?????) but now I'm pretty sure its about the metal cooling.

any of you have electric heat in your house? its the metal cooling and contracting, namely the heat sheilds around the exhaust that are made from thin sheet metal...get really hot...and start cooling fairly quick
