Its a bar of clay that you use to lift all of the very fine dirt particles out of the paint, especially before you wax. Look for one at your local automotive store, they usually come with a spray bottle of lubricant.

Check out Clay Magic...
http://www.claymagic.net/

I have my xB polished/waxed at least once a year if not every six months as it removes a majority of oxidization and debris from paint.

If you want to attempt doing the job yourself check out www.ziano.com it is a whole car care system that works well if you read the instructions.....It goes through the whole process of cleaning, claybarring, and waxing.......it is a little pricey but if you want to get in touch with your inner waxer there ya go

Bird crap and bugs actually etch (eat) the paint. You can make them less noticable by rubbing them out with a rotory buffer then follow with some good quality wax. Keep detail spray and a towel handy to remove that stuff ASAP. It will do more damage over time.

Look into using a sealant (Klasse makes a good one) before waxing. Look at www.autopia.com for full information.

I think she got scared off by all the tech stuff. Keep it waxed monthly. If it's never been waxed before the bugs and bird do do have prolly done major damage to the paint already. If I were her I would take it to a pro detailer and have them do their thing once a month. The price you pay for owning a Scion with crappy paint.
