What engine oil do you guys prefer ?
If your oil is as low as you say you need to put something in it before driving. Your worry is not mixing oil, but rather adding oil before you damage the engine. Running without oil or low oil is far worse than any thing you could do by mixing brands or types. As for mixing syn and regular oil, I have been using 1 to 2 quarts of synthic oil with every oil change for over 15 years now. The synthetic blends you buy now are only a few percent synthetic. I am getting 20 to 40 percent synthetic. depending on the total capacity. I started doing this when I had to park outside and would hear a little valve clicking on start up in cold weather. The use of the synthetic better lubricated the internals and the valve clicking stopped.
I use AMSOIL fully synthetic 5w30 in my 2005 tC.
I change it every 4500-5000 miles or so and check the oil level regularly and my engine barely consumes any oil - and I drive 80-120 miles a day 5x a week.

I think your two best options are a conventional 5w30 or a full Synthetic like Mobil 1. The conventional oil will NEED to be changed every 3000 miles if you want to keep your engine clean and in top shape where if you go with full synthetic you dont have to worry about build up of sludge.
I myself am using full Synthetic (even though some people think its pointless) because I dont want engine build up and I want my engine run healthy as long as possible.
It basically comes down to cost and how much you care about your car.

No problem adding synthetic to your existing oil, they're fully compatible and I've done it many times in several vehicles, no issues at all.
