Right, usually you (and the IRS) just get a form 1099 at the end of the year showing the value of your winnings as income, and it is just figured into your taxes as if you made that much extra money.
Some of us don't make enough for a thousand dollars to make any difference at all, while those of us who make enough for it to have an effect should be able to cover the small change it makes (unless you are unlucky and it is just enough to bump you up a bracket...).
In any case, it is basicly handled just like stock dividends or savings account interest, gambling winnings, or any of those things you get 1099s for.
This is small enough amount that it shouldn't require any up-front "withholding," so it should just be figured into your income taxes, when you do them, as extra income.
(If this were a sizable amount - like you just won a $100,000 lottery or something, the IRS would want about 35% of that before you ever saw it, little things like this they usually don't sweat.)
