amd vs intel?
Ok, im fixing to get a new computer and was wondering which is better? seems most people have a celeron (which i know is crap) or a pentium 4 or higher. Is amd better? I need a good processor for a few hundred bucks
Im an AMD guy, tend to be cheaper and produce less heat. Plus the design for the Intel Core Duo (not the new $1000 ones) are crap! The two cores talk to each other through the mobo unlike AMD that talk in the chip itself.
The real question is what do you do with your computer? If your not looking for a gaming PC stick with a slower processor and get some extra RAM.

What are you planning to do with the computer? Hardcore gaming or video editing? The good ol' Intel P4 will do just fine for watever tho IMO, i've been using one and have had no complaints so far.

I've had my 2.0ghz P4 for 4 years now, absolutely no problems. One of my friends bought his computer at the same time as me and it had a AMD, same speed, and he had to get the computer replaced after about 2 years. I've always like Intel better. I agree that you'd be very happy with the new Core Duo's or for a bit less, a P4 Hyper Threading would also be a good one.
I use it mostly for gaming and a little video editing. Right now i have a p4 3ghz a crappy motherboard 1gig ram and a gforce 6800 gt. Im planning to put a new one together but been out of school a while and not sure about all the new processors
I have an AMD 4200+ with 2GB RAM and 2 7800 GTs in SLi. Built it for gaming and have been very pleased with it. Last PC was a P4 2.8ghz with a Radeon 9800 Pro and 1gb RAM and had no problems with it either. It seems AMD and Intel keep swapping places on the "who's best chart".
What games are you running? I play Battlefield 2, Prey, F.E.A.R and WoW and have all settings at max with my AMD setup and have no performance problems. Hopefully that will give you a frame of reference.

I like AMD.
Intel has weak sauce L1 cache, and although they have 65nm process types, wait till AMD unveils theirs.

AMD FTW,i Just or an 1md 3700+ san diego, used to be $250, now its just $100.00 on newegg, 1 gig of level 2 cache, amazinglg AMAZINGLY fast single core processor. If you're not going to be doing multiple apps at once, skip on the dual core and get this...otherwise the x2 (amd dual core) 3800 is only about 140 or so now...

lol boy what did we start. basically all comes down to what your pref is with. I use to deal with pentiums then i got the athlon 4800 when it came out and its great. If the p4's are really that much better then get those. Id just do a cost/spec analysis and see which one is the better buy. www.tomshardware.com is a good reference.

AMD does this because there processor can complete an intsruction on every clock tick and every half tick, whereas the Pentiums can only complete an instruction on the clock tick. (Its actually every positive and negative tick but you should get the point).
As far as naming, Intel used the Pentium name for its high end chips and used a 1-4 to seperate chip designs (although cores changed during one pentium number) and AMD decided to use Athlon as the name and the clock speed as its number system.
^ i dont think so, they just give em numbers, people like to assume that they name then as to how fast it would be compared to a pentium but not true...never ever heard of a working clock speed and real clock speed... it just has a speed period, but u can overclock it if u want usually
