I love movies!! I'll start with the ones that have become more mainstream but not really-

Clockwork Orange
Full Metal Jacket
Mean Creek
Elephant
Usual Suspects
THX 1138: The George Lucas Director's Cut
Dr.Strangelove

That is all I can think of at the moment. Go to Blockbuster online or Netflix and look around. I think you can do that with out signing up....

Love On A Diet (HK, 1992)
Blue Spring (JP, 2001)
The Day After (US,1983)
The Last Emperor (US, 1987)
Vertigo (US, 1958...Puts all modern horror and suspense films to shame)
North By Northwest (US, 1959)
The Birds (US, 1963)
Fahrenheit 451 (UK, 1966)
Sleeper (US, 1973 by Woody Allen)
The Great Escape (US, 1963)

...with the exception of Sleeper, all the above were main stream at one time. You can probably pick the last six for free at your local public library.

French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet has some cool/fun movies. Not really artsy or anything, but a neat visual style. Check out City of Lost Children or my favorite, Amelie.

HK director Wong Kar Wai is pretty badass visually toobut in a different way. Check out 2046 or Chunking Express.

These flicks should be a good foreign film primer

There are some really good American indie films.

My #1 choice would be:
"The Dream Catcher" (Has nothing to do with the Stephen King "Dreamcatcher" film; this one's hard to find, but it is out on DVD. Director is Edward Radtke.)

Also check out:
"Mysterious Skin"
"L.I.E."
"The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys"
"Hedwig and the Angry Inch"

Also some really good British films:
"Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels"
"******"
"New Year's Day"
"Velvet Goldmine"

And then of course there are independent classics like "Mad Max."
