I'm surprised that no one mentioned Symphony X. ...VERY progressive metal.
If you're not already familiar with them, check out Outworld. Rusty Cooley is, by far, one of the most talented guitarists on the planet!
Other than those, I tend to prefer the old-school versus the new.
Anthrax
SOD
Testament
Megadeth (Rust in Peace is STILL one of my favorite albums of all time)
Slayer
Death
Cynic
Sepultura (early... think Arise)
Pantera
Metallica (as someone stated before, prior to the black album)
Metal Church
Cacophony
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
I could go on and on...

I see one person has name soilwork, definately an awesome band, if you like in flames, you have to pick them up. New album is coming out soon, and if you haven't heard it I totally recommend picking up Stabbing the Drama. In Flames is pure melodic death metal awesomeness.
Although I have not seen anyone mention Corrosion of conformity, Down (spetember 26th y'all), Dark Tranquility, Crowbar, Trivium (while they look bad their older stuff is awesome)
I do love Pantera, Damage plan (R.I.P. Dime) and hellyeah. Just to name a few, Iced Earth is awesome as well if you like epic metal. (new album as well)

Some ones that people like, that I don't understand, Bullet for my valentine (yay screaming emo, and don't try to argue this unless you've seen them live, and if you have... you wouldn't argue this) as I lay dying (same as bullet), Lamb of God (hardcore just isn't my scene, plus their live shows have alot to be desired, but they have my respect unlike the last 2 bands), and Shadows Fall (they put on a great show on ozzfest and I do respect them, but I just can't get into their music.)

oh and P.S. am I the only one who sees Lordy (what a horrible name) as horrible?

well metal is meant to be underground.. not whats popular.. so of course its always gonna be nerdy.. cause your always gonna find the guys like me.. that worship metal.. people who dont care about petty things like listening to what everyone else is (whats considered cool)

bands like Soilwork and In Flames older stuff was way better.. then their new stuff.. however i still like there newer stuff.. why give up on a band from changing styles.. just realize that what they used to be will never be the same.. basically like listening to another band..

there are many bands that have done this.. Sentenced, Amorphis, Construcdead, Darkane, Hypocrisy.. the list can go for a long time.. yet all are still great bands

In Flames is an awesome example of a changing sound. I play a lot of In Flames in my car but everytime I put on Soundtrack to Your Escape my gf actually likes it a little and is surprised when I tell her it's In Flames.

oh i have no problem with it, i have a very broad taste in my metal, i just started listening to them when they were faster and more i guess you could say underground so i got used to that. But you're very correct, look at a band like Anathema, started out like doom metal, now theyre something more like art/progressive rock and one of my alltime favorite bands

how can you listen to stabbing the drama and not think it's a great song. (the song itself) It's powerful, deep, and yes the true definition of melodic death metal.

i can agree with you that is a great song.. but its not True melodic death metal.. the first 2 Soilwork albums, and the first 5 In Flames albums were truly melodic death metal.. there newer stuff is just Gothenburg Modern Rock... listen to the difference, and you will notice a big difference.. i also recommend Gardenian, Within-Y, Ablaze My Sorrow..etc[/quote]

If you like That soilwork album, I highly recommend Katatonia - A Great Cold distance. One of the best written, best produced and just catchiest damn rock/metal albums I've ever heard. I really cant get enough of the album!
