BERLIN - Berlin Zoo's abandoned polar bear cub Knut looks cute, cuddly and has become a front-page media darling, but an animal rights activist insists it was wrong to intervene and save the cub.

"Feeding by hand is not species-appropriate but a gross violation of animal protection laws," animal rights activist Frank Albrecht was quoted as saying by the mass-circulation Bild daily, which has featured regular photo spreads tracking fuzzy Knut's frolicking.

"The zoo must kill the bear."

How could you?

they only got another 50 years in the wild anyway, they'll need all the bloodlines they can get to reintroduce them later on.

"Polar bears are under threat of extinction, and if we feed the bear with a bottle, it has a good chance of growing up and perhaps becoming attractive as a stud for other zoos," Schuele said.
Are any or even many animals in a zoo capable of making it on their own in the wild?

What's done is done. If there are zoos willing to take care of this bear for the rest of it's life, then I see no problem.

Sell the bear to a Peta member. . . it will resultingly kill itself due to the unbearable lameness of Pita.

But seriously, I'm not a hippie, but don't kill the bear. Kill Peta instead!

umm...i don't know anything about this, but wouldn't killing the bear be the ultimate violation of animal "protection"?

how is killing this creature save it from anything? if you ask me that's the cruelest thing you could do, the bear didn't even do anything and now it's being killed?

that's like killing someone for feeding someone else's child

lol...reminds me of a modest proposal....

Sparks: I've got a book.
Debbie: What's the book?
Sparks: A Modest Proposal.
Debbie: By Whom?
Sparks: Johnathan Swift.
Debbie: And what is the book about?
((long pause))
Sparks: Eating babies.
Debbie: ...the hell is that supposed to mean?
Sparks: It's like veal, only babies.
Debbie: That's sick!
Sparks: I'm talking real baby back ribs.
((long pause))
Debbie: ...the foulest thing I've ever heard!
Sparks: RIBS!!! Dripping with sauce!!! Falling off the bone!!!
Debbie: You sick bastard!!
Sparks: Just trying to help out a single mom.

Sorry, I don't see any need to kill an animal.
The fact is, most animals in zoos have human contact, it's unavoidable. So yea, it's not a matter of "well, in the wild this is how it is" because, guess what? Those animals are no longer in the wild, so the rules don't apply.
If conservation is the name of the game, then I don't see how killing (sorry "euthanizing") the bear would fall under the category of conservation.
