cell phones
I've had personal cell phones since 1984, and before that company mobile phones in my company cars.
They have been very valuable in situations where contacting someone urgently was needed - I.E. accidents, fires, lost, coordination with others, some travel circumstances, etc.
For the most part, VERY few people get my number, and very few of those call. I answer them all (except a few I have blocked...) because it gives me a stellar opportunity to be rude to someone for interrupting me for insufficient reason (by my standards).
If you carry a cell for those times you NEED to use it, and only use it at those times, you're OK. If, however, you end up aimelessly chattering on it for hours a day, even while walking next to someone you could be talking to but are ignoring, you have become a cellular 'droid. Bad juju.
Keep in mind, too, that if you only want one for "emergencies" that you can pick up any old cellphone that works in your area and never even get service for it. BY FEDERAL LAW, if you call 911 from any cellphone in the US, the carrier is REQUIRED to put the call through at no charge to the 911 center, even if the phone is not signed up for any service.
So, "should I get a cellphone," is really "should I get cellular service?"
Only if you want to.
In any case, a very good addition to one's glovebox is a cellphone with a mobile power adapter to plug into the cig lighter. That way, even if the phone's battery is dead, if you have any power left in your car battery you should be able to make that urgent 911 call.
