to make it short and sweet the 7900 is better because even though it has less ram it has a more powerful chipset.

as far as suggestions for a laptop under 2k i'd definitely get a macbook pro. i have the macbook and it rocks hard. take the macbook and put it on steroids and you have the macbook pro. If you do get it i assure you that you won't be disappointed and it will last you many years

Anything in the 7900-series would be great, as the fill rate, bandwidth, etc are much, much better.

Don't buy a Mac ANYTHING until after MacWorld in January, as that is when they introduce new models and all of the "old" models will be marked down and sold as refurbs.

Other suggestions: Alienware Area-51m series, Sony's SZ series of notebooks, Samsung's X1, Acer's Ferrari line, and a Lenovo/ThinkPad.

as far as not buying a mac till after macworld i don't think you have to worry. that is because their whole laptop line has recently been shifted to the core 2 duo and another update a couple months after that wouldn't make sense. rumors are that they're releasing their iTV and apple phone.

if you do decide to get a windows based machine i'd recommend the lenovo/thinkpads, they are extremely solid computers

I just picked up a second laptop a few weeks back for $750. Compaq Presario V6120us. I was hesitant to buy a Compaq at first, but my HP had been perfect and I have been seeing the Compaq's increase in stability and such over the past few years so I was sold. I don't know what you plan on using it for, but I use this as my portable one(the HP is a 17" widescreen and a pain to cart around). I have no problems with gaming or anything else with it.

I think HP has finally started to make a good quality product after a long bout of crap. I've been recommending HP's to people since I bought my big one in August '05(dz8105 IIRC).

Unless you can find something to blow it out of the water at a comparable price, I'd say go for it.
