They had something similar to that on the old Vdubs with porsche motor swaps, they called them rat-tail exhaust. It used to be all the rage with motor swap guys. Hell my mom used to have a horizontally opposed porsche motor with a rat tail exhaust in her VW station wagon. It allows you to put resonators, mufflers, and tune the car exhaust better.
