I'm a big fan of the Mossbergs.

However, you might want to go fire the thing before you settle on it as a defensive weapon. That pistol-only grip is certainly not an advantage in a combat situation. I've found them very difficult to control. Don't ever try to fire it from an aiming/raised position, as it WILL knock teeth out.

I'd much prefer a traditional stock WITH a pistol grip, so you can sop up the recoil. They're easily interchanged, in case you ever want to convert yours.

This is a similar gun, with the aforementioned grip.

Either way, great gun, and it'll serve you very well. I've helped recover one from a house that got flooded, and it fires just fine. Had a LOT of mud in it though...

In the U.S., not very many. Most are post- May 1986, which makes them illegal for the civilian market, unless someone knows something I dont ---

Some of the better automatic pistols include:

Glock 18
Beretta 93R (more like an automatic taurus pt92 than 92FS)
Intratec DC9 (The infamous Tec-9)

And of course, the Mauser C96 -- a 1900's era gun made famous in the Resident Evil 4 game, called "Red 9" when chambered for 9mm parabellum, though it usually came in the old 7.63 Mauser cartridge.

-----------

Submachine guns aren't considered pistols, so I haven't mentioned any of those. The list gets a LOT bigger with this group, since the firearm is more controllable when it's got a buttstock.
I like the overall look of the Glock 18. Whats the folding handle on the Beretta 93R for?

In the context of self defense full automatic is not what you want. Its been more than proven than full automatic is inaccurate and basically just a waste of ammo. Fun for sure but for self defensive purposes going semi-automatic makes a lot more sense.
Target identification and backstop verification is important for home defense roles, full auto has no advantage and many disadvantages.
Be safe and have fun with your firearms.

I absolutely agree with goretro, but I was just answering the question.

I've never seen a fully automatic pistol, though I've played with several full-auto AK and AR variants. In my opinion, in a civilian's hands, a full auto assault rifle (correct term usage here) is a very expensive novelty. 30 rnds of .223 goes very, very fast at 600+ rounds per minute... and costs add up very quickly.

The ideal self defense weapon - Shotgun, hands down. Nothing else can put THAT much lead on a target in such a short time.... and can be converted to a "farmer's rifle" with the use of slugs.

The little handle on the 93R is just that... a handle for your other hand. Much easier to control with two separated hands (I'm assuming.)

Whoa I like the gun and the front muzzle break. Looks like a nice front edge on the gun too - nice serrations.
The gun salesman called it a breacher! Jab it into a wall or door and start twisting in a circular motion, side to side and then fire a round through it!
It's sharp has hell too...

It's a breacher.

No "twisting" involved. Using shotgun rounds designed for the purpose, place it against the door jamb (where the bolt from the door handle inserts) and blast away. The rounds substantially weaken the door frame, allowing you to kick it open with relative ease. The serrations and sharp points allow better gas disbursal at such a short range.

Placing a standard-style barrel without the breacher up against a door would be much more violent and unsafe, and probably would knock the gun right out of your hands. Particularly without the shoulder rest.

^^^The gun salesman made it sound like you could jab it into a wall and cut it, like a holesaw and then shoot through the hole just made!

Thanks for clarifying...

I've got the same gun, no breacher/standoff and no strap. I've got a different view of this gun than most. I think it has less recoil effect on me than a shoulder stock, and I think it's easier to control. Then again, I'm a big guy... and I load up 6 shot. Safer for the neighbors, and just as damaging to whatever. Thing is, my home has small rooms and lots of little corridors. If I needed to step outside or do any aiming whatsoever, I'd leave the mossberg behind and grab the Stoeger semi-auto (pistol grip w/ full stock) with 00 magnum buck.

I FINALLY found some much needed ammo, for both my Glock 19 (9mm) and my newly acquired Mossberg 500 tactical, which the wife has named Megan, after Megan Fox!...

Went to the gun range yesterday to pop the cherry on my Mossy!
WOW! What a rush! The 1st shot woke my ___ up...
After that, it was nice! The only problem is since I have a pistol grip on her, my thumb, on my right hand, hurts! Other than that, can't wait to go again and put more rounds through her!

Here is a pic of the victim!

YES! The destruction a shotgun creates is incredible isn't it? Close range it is the weapon to have. I have 00 Bucks, 1 ounce slugs and sabot slugs for my Mossy 590
My favorite .22 pistol (Ruger Mark II Target Bull Barrel, Hogue grip) and .22 rifle, Ruger 10/22 with a 44mm scope and aftermarket stock. I kept the stock barrel for reliability.

Recently got a box of talons from a good friend.

Thanks man!

In the 15+ years I've owned my 92FS I've changed the grips to the Hogue Finger Groove grips that you see, it gives it a 'feel' and control that i really like
over the plastic stock grips.

I also added adjustable rear sights since I originally got it with fixed sights. I used a brass punch and knocked out the reat sight and replaced with the new adjustable rear.
And finally, Mec Gar now makes 20+ round magazines for the 92FS which I have a few. I love these!

The 20 rounder has a nice extension on the bottom and MecGar bothers to continue the finger groove/grip down the front, first class work.
One of my 20 rounder mags vs. a Mec Gar 18 rounder
