Yeah it's cheaper in Portland then Medford too in fact from about roseburg on up it;s cheaper. Still would rather pump my own most are careful but now and then you get that dummy that spills it down the side of your car. I hate that.

Interesting... I had an old Chevy van that had so much carbon buildup (which increases compression) that it would knock on 89 octane (some brands more than others). That van had about 350,000 miles on it, so I wasn't going to spend any money cleaning the head... so I started using mid-grade and that prevented it from knocking.
Hopefully your tC isn't carboned up... but I guess it's possible. Have you tried a good combustion chamber cleaner? Maybe some SeaFoam? It's a long shot, but maybe it would help.
Just remember that there may be a more serious problem and using higher octane fuel may just be covering up a ticking timebomb.

I'm at 60k now. I've never used Sea Foam. I don't see why I'd have an unusual amount of carbon buildup. I've heard newer cars make the same noise in the same situation. The only common factor would be the fuel. I read that the introduction of Ethanol into auto fuels could be the culprit.
Ethanol shouldn't cause a problem... the fuel still has to meet the octane number that is posted on the pump. I would investigate it, because it could be a warning sign of something bad about to happen. A stock tC should not have pre-detonation with 89 octane gas.
