Default Hypermiling

This is the latest retardedness to hit a street near you. With gas prices on the rise, hypermiling is becoming the latest craze. Apparently anyone can be a hypermiler. The rules are simple:

- Use the brake as little as possible
- Use the accelerator as little as possible
- Find the flattest route possible
- Drive like a pússy

They recently did a feature about hypermiling on CNN, and there was a similar feature on my local tv news today. I have also witnessed this retarded behavior on the streets. Hypermilers take a stupidly long time to accelerate up to the speed limit, and will even go so far as to turn off the vehicle on flat or downhill stretches of road.

I'm all for trying to save a buck or two, but the whole idea of hypermiling is just dumb and dangerous. Here's a demonstration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNTnEDJf9AI

Yeah we can forget about it in Cali. But I wouldn't drive like this even if I could. It's extremely dangerous to drive slower than the posted limit and to take such a long time to accelerate up to speed. A hypermiler might improve their own efficiency, but just think about all the people braking and then speeding up to get around the slow hypermiler.

Stupid hypermilers. NOTE TO ALL HYPERMILERS: I will push you out of the way in my gas guzzling FJ. Ride a damn bike if you want to save gas!

Oohh, man this has been going on for a long time over where I live, in San Gabriel hahaha Typically though, along with the driving below the speed limit, people here refuse to use their turn signals or look before coming out of a driveway as well! So if I run into this type of driving elsewhere, I'll be prepared haha

^ It's just some jackáss driving too slow on his commute home from work. It shows the POV from his dash and the video has comments inserted, such as "oh no I had to use my brake" and "35mph in a 55".

TRUTH.

You can be ticketed for going slower than the posted limit. Cops would have a field day with these idiots. Plus, running a stop sign in the first minute of the video doesn't help your case.

haha those guys are dumb, hey RodC. i once got off the 118 freeway on DeSoto and i let the car roll down in Neutral but didn't let it go pass 60MPH since there is cops hiding there every now and then and i caught every light at green and the car stopped right infront of that california car cover shop right before Plummber and this was around 1am i'd have to admit, it was boring waiting but funny at the moment

^ I sometimes do the same thing coming down Topanga from the 118. The first half-mile is a big downhill, so that gets you lots of momentum for the flat section ahead. I never let the car come to a complete stop, but I can usually cover a couple of blocks in neutral before I need to apply some gas.

Hypermilers also tailgate 18 wheelers on the freeway thinking the under draft and reduced wind resistance increases their MPG. There was a local story about these people about a year ago.

That was proven to work on Mythbusters. At 55mph at a distance of 10 feet, they showed 29% better MPG.

even with gas prices so high, i can't bring myself to get anywhere near a big truck. i'm afraid of rocks/debris.

*edit to correct numbers

At the expense of their safety. Not to mention it's illegal. Same as going below the speed limit and accelerating at a slower rate.

Speaking only for CA, a speed limit is just that, the MAXIMUM one can legally drive. Regarding slower driving:

Minimum Speed Law
22400. (a) No person shall drive upon a highway at such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, unless the reduced speed is necessary for safe operation, because of a grade, or in compliance with law.

No person shall bring a vehicle to a complete stop upon a highway so as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic unless the stop is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law.

The maximum truck speed is 55 MPH in California. So if you go 55 MPH, you cant get a ticket as per the above CA code.

I believe the minimum is 45 MPH, but am not certian on that.

Personally, I drive a max of 60 MPH now and am getting between 39 and 41 MPG.

As far as drafting goes, I agree - its stupid.

^ I agree- drafting is stupid, just an accident waiting to happen-- I always try to keep a big distance between myself and the car in front, esp on freeways-- I just imagine the airbags deploying in my face and how much that sucks, and I keep my distance =]
